What to wear in Rome to look like a Roman?

I wouldn't worry about looking like a Roman. Comfortable clothes are the most important thing. I just came back from Rome a week ago, and it was very hot and humid. When you leave your hotel room in the morning, it is already warm and after a day of sightseeing, it is very hot. We wore cotton shorts and cotton shirts to be as comfortable as possible. In Rome, there are many tourists who wear the same (i.e., comfortable clothes, like shorts and shirts), and also many Italians (whether from Rome or other parts of Italy) wear comfortable clothings, too. Many Italians also wore American style clothing, too. Obviously, people who work in Rome are going to wear what is appropriate for them (suits for businesspeople, slacks or dresses for less formal situations).
I think that many of us are too concerned about what to wear. On the one hand it is a vacation, and on the other hand, we don't want to stick out. In Paris, it was cooler and rainy, and we wore long cotton pants, cotton shirts, and a sweater. The colors were not bright, beach colors, but more earth tones because that just fit in more. Italy is warmer, and people just wear brigther, more summery clothing.
One final thing. I live in Los Angeles, and sometimes see people walking along the beach or on the boardwalk with long pants, long sleeve shirts, and/or sport jacket. Their dress, and the fact that they carry cameras, leads me to believe that they are tourists. While they look a bit out of place (the rest of the people are in shorts or bathing suits and sandals), and are obviously tourists, so what? They are wearing what they are used to, and enjoing their travel, are contributing to our economy, and the fact that they look like "tourists" is no big deal.
Anyways, have a good trip.
