I would agree with the others that the best island is Burano but disagree on Torcello. Each to his or her own but I didn't find Torcello all that great. San Michele was a wonderful experience but for such a short trip I would not include it this time. Save it for the next trip as I am sure you will want to return.
Ira - Please do share the story of the man walking the fish. You have certainly piqued my curiosity.

>The Rialto is just another bridge.<
As are the Ponte Vecchio, The Golden Gate, the Brooklyn, Tower Bridge and Pont Alexandre.
Hi jd,
We saw a man walking along the edge of the street with a fishing rod and a line in the water. He seemed to be walking rapidly for fishing.
We got behind him and walked up close. At the end of the line was a fish, about 10" long, in a sort of harness.
The fish was swimming and seemed happy.

Somehow, I feel inclined to add that the Pont Neuf is also just another bridge.

I stick to my views about the Rialto, though they are of course just my opinion. It's crowded and rather unpleasant, given all the touristy shops and market stalls around it.
It has the advantage of age and authenticity over the Ponte Vecchio, however, being original and not a reconstruction (following German detonation of explosives in WW2).
I'd take the humble Accademia bridge any day, for the beauty of the approach and the hovering handsome bulk of the Salute nearby...But I'll not belabour the point, lest I appear affected, sententious and headstrong
