What is the best route from FCO to San Gimignano?
We're arriving early A.M. to FCO and are headed to San Gimignano for one night. Trying to decide on the best route and a place to stop and stretch our legs and relax in view of our long journey. Via Michelin shows the route through Tarquinia and up the west coast only about 15 min longer than the A1. Is anyone familiar with that route and would Tarquinia be a good stop?

Hi P,
Have you been to www.mappy.com as well? They recommend taking the A90 around Rome and then the SS2.

There are 3 possible routes and I have taken all 3 at various times. And, there is a combo route--A-1 to Orvieto and then S-2 north via Siena. I would be tempted on that one since Orvieto is such a great stop, and Bagno Vignoni makes a great 2nd stop, perhaps for lunch. If you take the coast road then be sure to come inland on S-68 and stop at Volterra.

Mappy indicates the coast road would take about an hour longer. It also routes you on A1 all the way to Florenc circle then back south, wonder why?
I think the A1 to Orvieto then S2 sounds good although we plan to meet friends in Orvieto for lunch the following week. We might get off the A1 near Sinalunga, How does that sound?
