What is Scotland?

We are going to Ireland and Scotland in 2003. We just had a discussion in our office and nobody knows ~ politically ~ what is Scotland (e.g., territory). Could a knowledgeable person inform two stupid Americans and one smart German how to refer to Scotland.

Scotland is a country and a nation. it is not a nation state. It is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland

It has a devolved parliament which has te power to legislate on all but the "reserved matters" such as foreign affairs, social security, and defence.

It came together in the form in which we now know it, in the 11th century, and was independent, give or take the odd war with England until 1603, when the King of Scots inherited the English throne. In 1707, the Scottish parliament voted to merge itself with the English one.

We got stuck then until 1979, and the passage of the Scotland Act which created the status quo.

Is that enough?
