I will warp the question a bit to my favorite moments in Germany.
-Taking a walk in the forest near Queidersbach.
-Visiting the square in Würzburg on market day.
-Running through seven villages near Roßtal.
-Walking the dike north of Bremerhaven when the Skylarks are singing.
-Drinking wine served at a kitchen table in Landstuhl.
-Cycling north of Bremerhaven.
-Drinking coffee while listening to Mozart on a jukebox in Baden Baden, while it was pouring rain outside.
-Eating a winter supper in Koblenz at dusk as we watched river boats on the Rhine.
-Walking the area around Schwangau in the spring when the deer first come out of the woods to feed on the new grass.
Regards, Gary

My best memories from two years there:
Stein am Rhine and Lake Contance (Bodensee) with the Isle of Mainau
Rothenberg ob de Tauber
Driving through Bavaria - no particular city, just the landscapes, although Augsburg is lovely

lorikeet,
from what I have heard, the Fuerst Bismarck is alright for what it is - a centrally located no-frills place. However, I don't like its location opposite Central Station too much. The area around it is quite seedy and you need to be a bit on your guard later at night - a couple of drug pushers like to frequent that side of Central Station.
On the other side there is a brand new InterCity Hotel, which, while a bit non-descript, might be a better choice in the same area, but not the same location.
Other than that, a colleague of mine just recently stayed at the Hotel Vorbach and really enjoyed it. It is housed in some historic mansions in the upscale neighbourhood of Rotherbaum, adjacent to the University Campus and within easy walking distance to Dammtor station (and even to city center). They paid around EUR 100.00 for a double. If you could get that, I would certainly prefer it.
Enjoy your trip!

I don't know if I can come up with 10, but my favorite places would include Berchtesgaden, the Oberallgäu (specifically the upper Iller valley between Immenstadt and Oberstdorf), the Schwäbisch Alb (Sigmaringen to Herrenberg), and the upper Black Forest (Bad Herrenalb to Bad Wildbad to Freudenstadt).
I like these places because of their scenic beauty and the fact that they are, for the most part, unknown to American tourists.
Public transportation in this area is great. I have spent eight weeks there without ever needing a car.

Ingo,
yes, if I had been conscious of any communication channel apart from here, I would have informed you anyway. The corridors may be a bit dated, but rooms reportedly were fine. No room-service reportedly (at least not round the clock), but personally, I can do without.
Depending on the price they are asking, it might be a nice option. But then, over weekends (esp. after the World Cup in summer) you often even can have the 5* properties for relatively small money. So it might be worth checking regularly.
Let me know the dates you'll be here - I'll gladly fill in with a few tips!

Thanks hsv. I thought you had seen that I posted my email address a couple of times on Fodors. I will get some more spams, but anyway, here it is again: ibrenn(at)web.de
I will be in Hamburg from a Sunday to Wednesday in the second half of July. Hamburg Tourismus has good deals for upscale hotels (3=2) if Fri, Sat or Sun night is included. The Steigenberg e.g. would be 274 Euro for the three nights (single room) incl. the Hamburg Card. Sounds affordable to me
The Vorbach would be 230 Euro. No doubt where to stay, eh?
I will start a thread with some detailed questions in a few weeks. Hope you'll be around, hsv!
