Were would you go from Rome

...we shall be in Rome 7 days this coming Winter and I am considering spending 3 days in Rome, take train to Orvieto
for two days then train from Orvieto to Firenze for two more days and then train back to Rome. From Rome we are flying to Madrid as part of same holiday.
Considering we shall be arriving on Feb 23 to Rome, and that we have been many times in Italy, were would you go?

Why not consider Sicily? Rural Sicily is absolutely one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. You could train down from Rome - it's a very fine journey - or rent a car in Rome.
Hope this helps.

Hi G,

I suggest making Orvieto a daytrip from Rome and adding the days to Florence.

How about Arezzo instead of going to Orvieto.

Just curious...Graziella, why did you recommend Arezzo over Orvieto. I will be in Rome in February and was planning to do a day trip to Orvieto, but would love to hear other possibiliies that are easy from Rome (other than Ostia, or Tivoli).

Hi risab I guess you did not pay attention that it was I who started this mess. Actually my firsst choice was Orvieto. For a day trip from Rome Ostia Antica is very interesting . Most like we shall go to Orvieto and from there to Firenze. As Ira suggested may be we should spend only one night in Orvieto and three in Firenze.
All this destinations are very nice, the thing is that we have visited all of them in the past . If Orvieto is your first time I would go there, it is a lovely place with the right amount of things to do in a day starting with the duomo.

Haven't done it myself yet, but intend, perhaps this February also, to get to Ravenna to see the Byzantine mosaics. Jump off city will be Bologna, which sounds attractive in its own right. So how about Rome -- Bologna (Ravenna) -- Florence -- Rome?

I love Rome and would probably spend all nights there, but if I had to choose I think I would base myself in Assisi and spend a little time driving around the Umbrian countryside. From Assisi would could easily visit Bevagna, Montefalco, Trevi, etc. We spent a week in this area in March and fell in love with it.
