What about Ostia Antica...or Tivoli...both are suppose to be great day trips from Rome.

Go see the garden at Ninfa if you are in Rome the first Sat or Sun or the third Sun. Requires a train ride to Latina then bus or taxi to Ninfa.
This is the most romantic garden I have seen in Italy.

Hello bacci111!

When my husband and I stayed in Rome, we did a day trip to Anguillara on Lake Bracciano. It is just a short train ride north of Rome. It is an absolute jewel of a town.

All great suggestions but I really liked Ostia. Do the ruins and take the train to the next stop and have lunch on the water.

Hi Bacci - Lots of options ...

Assisi? Cortona? Spoleto?
Castel Gandolfo/ Lake Albano/ Colli Albani?
Montecassino
Caserta
Viterbo
Tarquinia
Subiaco
Lake Bracciano
Sperlonga

... to name a few

Anzio--on a commuter line--on the ocean--no tourists ( or few ) some Roman ruins on the sandy beaches--restaurants right on the harbor
