Day trips out of Rome
Since you people were so helpful with my questions about heading to the AC, I am hoping that you can do the same with this query. I'd really like to see Hadrian's villa and the Tivoli gardens...is there an easy way (no car) to get to these? Also, what other nearby spots would be worth a trip? I know I had read somewhere about Orvieto...how far is it and is it worthwhile? This probably will be our last trip to the Rome area, and besides the time in Rome itself (after our two days in AC, we'll have seven more days for Rome and whatever else we want to see), what would some of you experienced travelers recommend? Thanks.

Tivoli is a very pleasant day trip from Rome (can be reached via bus or train), and the two attractions you mentioned there are terrific.
I also very much liked Ostia Antica, which can be reached via subway from Rome.

Frascati, Marino, and the many towns east of Rome are accessible by train (and great to see). We used our motorino to head up into these hills. Other day trips might include Tivoli (http://tinyurl.com/tivoli-daytrip), Ostia Antica (http://tinyurl.com/ostia-antica), Orvieto (http://tinyurl.com/orvieto-daytrip), or Lake Bracciano (http://tinyurl.com/lake-bracciano).
Anzio abd Nettuno are easy to get to by train and the beaches are prettier there than near Rome. Other things to see INSIDE Rome might include any of the Catacombs (http://tinyurl.com/rome-catacombs), perhaps Aqueduct Park (http://tinyurl.com/aqueduct-park) or the Non-Catholic Cemetery (http://tinyurl.com/Cestio). There is SO much to see in Rome! Good Luck!

Since you mentioned it. Orvieto is an easy one hour train trip from Rome. Across the street from the station a funicular takes you up to Orvieto Alto, a flat little city with one of the great duomos in the country. Also, I Sette Consoli, my favorite restaurant in all of Italy.

Hi Sherrala, Tivoli is one of the best trips out of Rome. Actually the attractions there are THREE, and NOT two. You have, inside the little town, Villa d'Este with its famous 100 fountains (and much more, the gardens, the reinassance building and so on) AND Villa Gregoriana, opened for the first time in may 2005, with its cascade, roman houses built in rocks, temples and caves.
Then, a couple of kms away from the town there is Villa Adriana, which, further than the ruins, is also a spa.
You can get there by metro+bus or by train.

I can also recommend day trips to Ostia Antica, Orvieto, and Hadrian's Villa/Tivoli. I've done all 3 during varies trips over the last 5 years and you really can't go wrong with any of them. I wanted to get to the Casteli Romani towns on my last visit, but it was November and weather, short days, and just so much to do in Rome itself, prevented me from doing that excursion...just another reason to go back to Roma!
