You don't have to find them anywhere. They are IMHO more easily bought in London. You will need a passport sized photo if you decide to buy it in London but no waiting for pins and needle for it to arrive and one less thing to remember to bring.
One other consideration...if you wait till London you have the option of saving £3 by buying a zone 1 only; an option not avalable with the Visitor's card on sale outside UK. If you are staing in zone 1 and not going to both Greenwich and the zoo, you will do fine with a zone 1. Both of those are in zone 2 and since an extension of zone 1 to zone 2 costs £1, the math shows that if you go to one of those, it' an extra £2 for that trip; going to both is £4 wiping out the savings for a zone 1.
The above infomation is absolutely correct unlike the information some know nothings place on the board.

You CAN purchase Visitor Travelcards online. Here's the website--cut and paste into your browser:
http://www.thetube.com/content/visit...pandonly=menu1
the link is on the right-hand frame of this page "Buy your Travelcard online". This takes you to a site called http://www.ticket-on-line.co.uk. But, I was unable to find the Visitor Travelcard by going directly to that site...
You can purchase an "all zones" or a zones 1-2 card; adult or child fare; 3, 4 or 7 day length. It will be mailed to the USA.
The VISITOR Travelcard does not require a passport-sized photo. Other Travelcards, purchased in the UK do require the photo.
I hope this helps

As kaudrey and some of the others said - just wait until you are in London and buy a zone 1 travel card. The ID card portion will be good for subsequent trips - next time you bring your ID folder with the laminated photo and just buy a current pass.
