Visiting Versailles from our hotel near Gare du Nord & Gare de l' Est area of Paris this month.

We'll be in Paris March 17-22, and want to visit Versailles from our hotel on Rue des Recollets which is a short walking distance from both Gare du Nord and Gare de l' Est train stations and the Metro. We understand the correct destination is Versailles Rive Gauche via RER C. However, from our hotel area what is the best departure point to get to Versailles?

Looking at the metro map you will have to go to either Gare de Nord or Gare de l'Est which ever is closer and get on line 4 in the direction of Porte d'Orleans. Get off at metro St.Michel and get the RER C from there.

Hi TT,

Go to www.ratp.fr

It will give you directions from almost anywhere to almost anywhere else.

RER B from Gare du Nord to Saint Michel. RER C from Saint Michel to Versailles.

Or you can take the RER E from Gare du Nord to Haussmann Saint Lazare and the suburban train from Saint Lazare to Versailles.

RER B to RER C to Versailles RG: good advice.

RER E to St-Lazare to Versailles RD: not recommended (it's a goodly hike to RER E at Magenta, and Rive Droite is much further from the chateau than Rive Gauche).

RER B from Gare du Nord to Saint Michel, then RER C out to Versailles.

Anyone going to go out to Versailles is in for a goodly hike no matter how he gets there, so it might be a good idea to save one's energy for the gardens and palace rather than the trip out there.

And pay attention when you get on the RER C at St-Michel. The line splits and not all trains go to Versailles RG (Rive Gauche). There will be illuminated signs above the platform indicating the terminus of the next trains. Also, the engine of your train will have a name on the front beginning with the letter V.
