visit to Pompeii
I will be flying into Naples in October with my ultimate destination being the Amalfi Coast. I was going to use Sorento as a base from which to explore Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Herculaneum, but it would be so much more convenient if I could visit these destinations on the way down from Naples, instead of having to backtrack. The problem is that I will have my luggage with me. Since the train stations no longer have lockers, does anyone know of any other locations, like maybe a tourist office, where luggage can be stowed safely? Much thanks.

You should just stay in Sorrento and do day trips from there...Capri, Positano, Pompeii. If you can, stay at the Bellveu Syrene (sp?). It is perfectly located walking distance into town and everywhere else. If you go to Pompeii ...take some type of a tour. We were with our 10 and 13 year old and it was our last day (out of 14)and our kids had no personality left so we did not sign up for a tour. What a mistake!

We were in Pompeii in Sept. 2003. We had our luggage with us (having just taken the train down from Rome) and we stored it at Pompeii. You buy your tickets, pass through the stiles, and on your right is a dedicated building for luggage. I'm sure Pompeii has a website that you can double check to see if this is still the case.

Pompeii would be the easiest one to do. ~150m from the station to the luggage storage, it is in a rural area (100m of road & 50m path).
Herculaneum is ~500m thru a busy city (sidewalks, traffic, people) and uphill on the wayback. Regards, Walter
p.s. I've posted very detailed directions to all 3 of these sites and more in the area. Do a search on me for it or email me just put 'ROME' in the Subject Line.
