Pompeii Help
I'll b e in Italy next week for 2 weeks! can't wait. But, I am trying to figure out the best way to do Pompeii-
I have a few options and was hoping to get an opinion on what seems the most logical/
We are staying in positano for 4 nights and then off to Rome for our flight
so, do we
1. do Pompeii as a day trip during our stay in Postano..and if so do I hire a driver (thinking this might be way out of my budget) or train it?
2. On our last day, hire a driver to go to pompeii and then do a tour, then drop us off at the Naples trian station to get us to rome?
3. Take the train to Naples, transfer to go to Pompeii (what should we do about luggage) and then take train back etc.. and head to ROme..
And if we did hire a driver/guide..is this rreally expensive? I think I saw a price online but it was for a full day trip and it was 350 euro...way out of my budget
Thanks for the advice!

From Positano to Pompeii, you would take the bus (about 4€)to Sorrento (or ferry if one is running - possibly not)and the local train to Pompeii Scavi (about 2-3€). If you want to do this on your departure day, you would just store your luggage at the entrance to Pompeii. The train from Pompeii to Naples is only a few euro also.

We visited Pompeii last fall and, on the advice of the helpful Fodor's Forum folks, did it as a day trip and not as a stop on our return to Rome. Advantages are that you won't have to haul luggage and you won't feel time pressure and can spend as long as you like at Pompeii. From Positano, take a SITA bus to Sorrento and then the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi.
