Vietri sul Mare
Vierti sul Mare as Basecamp? We are a group of 6/8 who plan to stay somewhere for 3/4 nights and go out daily to various sites. would this be a good place to be? We arrive in Naples - pick up a car - drive to base - daily trips to Pompei/Amalfi coast/ - back to Naples.
Are there any suggestions or tips please - places to stop - places to eat - MUST see spots etc?

We (4 of us) based in Vietri for a week in mid-May--we found it to be a great base for easily visiting the many must-sees in the area. We did day trips to Paestum, Herculaneum, and Pompeii by car (all reachable in easy drives), as well as Cetara, Ravello, and Erchie on the Amalfi coast. We took separate day trips by boat to Amalfi and Positano, though you could easily combine them if need be (returned by bus from Amalfi to Vietri). We did not get to Capri and the Sorrento side of the coast because we ran out of time. If you are interested, part 2 of my trip report has the Vietri-area details of our trip (click on my name and look for "40 days..."
We were happy we based in Vietri and I think you might be too.

Me too I completely agree that Vietri sul Mare is a very smart basecamp to visit Amalfi Coast and Paestum.
Do not miss, as you have a car, to drive also at the top of the hill where there is a magic hamlet, Albori, far from tourism flow, where you can enjoy the view of the Bay of Salerno.
In Marina di Vietri sul Mare do not miss one of the best seafood restaurants of the whole region: Sapore di Mare.
If you want tips about Amalfi Coast and Paestum, I will be glad to help you.
Ciao.
Vincenzo

Thank you both so much! l will probably heed your advice and make it our basecamp. We did a simmiar thing when we went to the Cinque Terre - based ourselves in Sestri Levante and went up and down the coast by train and ferry - great way to see it all. l have heard that Herculeneum is better than Pompei - what are your comments? and Paestum? We will only have 3 days & 4 nights.
