Vienna Prague and Munich by train

We will b traveling late May flying to Vienna and visiting there, Prague and Munich getting around via train. Preference is to use public trans where possible.

What is the most convenient way to get from Vienna airport to Innere Stadt (St Stephen's Cathedral) as we will have a hotel nearby? Would like to avoid several connection solutions.

is there a train that goes from Munich to Vienna airport?

No direct train from Munich. You change in Salzburg or Vienna.

Why not fly into Vienna and out of Munich - saving a day and cost of return to Vienna?

Check out the www.seat61.com site thursdaysd mentions - a wealth of info on trains and especially discounted tickets you can get if you book early enough to get the limited in number ones. Other sites I like for general info on trains are www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Forget any railpass -not nearly traveling enough on trains to even look at them.

Prague to Munich is quicker by bus but check all schedules at www.bahn.de/en to see.

The most convenient public transport option would be the Vienna Airport Lines bus services.
https://www.viennaairportlines.at/de/blog/1005

The bus stops are right on the curb of the terminal exit, and you walk from baggage claim to there not more than 2 minutes.
Schwedenplatz, terminus of line VAL2, is quite close to Stephansplatz. You should check Google maps if the required walking to your hotel is within your comfort zone.

Another option would be to take the S-Bahn from Vienna Airport to Wien Mitte/Landstr. station, and change there to U3 (yellow line) subway to Stephansplatz station. The connection from S-Bahn to U-Bahn is step-free with elevators.
There is also the "city airport train" CAT from VIE to Wien Mitte - but it costs a lot more, with no real extra benefit (appr. 5 minutes faster).

If you buy point-to-point train tickets to go back from Munich to Vienna Airport, make sure that your final destination on the ticket is Vienna Airport, so you get the whole trip on one ticket (only in case you really want/need to travel from Munich to Vienna Airport continously, and do not want to stop over in Vienna again).

Again if not bought plane tickets why not fly back home from Munich and save that half-day of travel and cost to get back to Vienna?

Or have you bought tickets?

Check www.bahn.de/en for schedules and fares -including any discounted fares if available - you will probably have to change in Munich Hauptbahnhof as only S-bahns I believe serve the airport but when buying ticket do as Cowboy says and book Munich flughafen to Vienna.
