My daughter is a student and is staying in Vienna for the summer. She would like to know some inexpensive places to eat and go. She does not know where to start. Can anyone suggest some inexpensive restaurants in Vienna? Can anyone who has visited Europe tell her the top 10 things they would do if they were lucky enough for this opportunity.

I'm sure many here can supply a list of inexpensive places, but since she will be a student she will probably simply have to follow her peers to the watering holes they prefer and go to (which are rarely the upscale restaurants). I doubt that she wants to have dinner somewhere on her own, when she could join others with more knowledge of the young scene in town.

Go to Schonbrunn palace. Great day event with a wonderful zoo! Student discounts too...

She is a student but she is not in school in vienna. She is doing an internship and she is pretty much on her own over there. so if someone can point her to some places that would be fantastic. she went to the Vienna Symphony at the palace a couple of nights ago and got cheap tickets to see das rheingold?

Otherwise I assume that most eateries on and around Mariahilfer Strasse (main shopping street, your daughter will have heard of it) are rather budget- than upscale-oriented.

If she is looking for some day-trip destinations, anything from Kloster Melk to Bratislava are nearby. Klosterneuburg with the monastery is even more like a suburb of Vienna and also nice. The usual suspects (Schönbrunn, St Stephen's, Prater, Hundertwasser house, coffee houses in the 1st district etc., Museums Quarter) should be found in any leaflet from the local tourist information.

The Centimeter is a moderate but nice restaurant near the West railway station. Named for its special, a meter long wurst. Collegiate type atmosphere.

Here's an easy day trip outside Vienna. Take a tram to Baden which is a nice spa town. She might enjoy a band concert in the park and find the house where Beethoven completed his Ninth Symphony.

Many places in Vienna offer a " Midday "special meal of 2-3 coures at a fixed price.
These will be shown as the Mittag menu or something similar

often soup and main course or soup , main course and dessert - between 5-10 euro depending on the place .

Centimeter has many locations in Vienna and offers good value.
Also good Reinthalers on Dorotheerergasse near to Graben- excelent food in the city center.

Places like Smutny on Elisabethstrasse close to the Opera have good midday offerings as well as regular menu.

The Rosenberger Buffet just behind the Sacher Hotel and Opera has good food buffet at great price.

The beer places like Siebensternbrau, Fischerbrau and Salmbrau good food , beer and atmosphere at fair price.

The university has a Mensa dining restaurnat with cheap prices.

She can purchase a VorteilSCard for students under 26.
One time fee of less than 30 euro and then 595 off all train tickets within Austria - good money saving for travel.

Salzburg - a great day trip by train- cheap with Vorteilscard - 2 1/2 hours one way -
buy food and drink before the trip and enjoy this on the train - many do this so she is not alone.

Baden less than 1 hour by Tram- the Badnerbahn or better local train - again Vorteils applies-
beautiful town, gardens casino, summer theater.

Carnuntum- formwer roman garrision town- interesting exhibits and reconstructed buildings such as a villa. small nice museum.

Schloss Hof-
former summerpalace of the royals - beautiful gardens - restaurnat.

many summer music opportunities- Nightly and Free - the concerts shown on the giant screen at the City Hall ( Rathaus ) with a food court but expensive.
Swimming at the Alte Donau or other places.

Walking, jogging, biking on Donau Insel in the middle of the danube- take your own picnic- many use this as a sun bathing place.

Thus much to see and do in vienna- but perhaps best to do - some walking tours of the back streets in the city center - surprising what you find.
A visit to the Auction House - the Dorotheum- free and several rooms of things to buy without the auction- a good look at history-
a saturday or any other day at the naschtmarkt - open food market and much more- also home to many little places to eat including cheap turkish places.
