I cannot find this new hotel listing on the "hotels" of this website and have not heard of anyone who has stayed here. For anyone interested, it seems reasonably priced (less than $200 US for July) and doesn't have a 5-night stay minimum like some other hotels, but I want at least one good recommendation before booking it ...... please respond asap if you know anything good or bad about this hotel. Thanks.

Being a new hotel, might now be any who can provide you pro/con opinions. Since there's rarely anything "new" built in Venice, do you know if:<BR> (1) it was a renovated hotel and under new management?<BR> (2) formerly a villa (I think ALL homes/apts are described as 'villa' for marketing purposes) and now they've renovated, making it a hotel?<BR><BR>What's the address? Good location? Often when these "new" hotels are just getting into market, it's a great value as they are undiscovered.

Tess, it's in the "Cannaregio" area- whatever that means? I wanted to stay in the area by Metropole, etc.. but those hotels are $350-$800 a night!<BR><BR>Antico Doge- they called themselves a new hotel- opened 9 months ago - in a "famous ancient palace of ....near the Rialto Bridge and the S. Marco Square." <BR>

Look at Karen Brown's website of Country Inns of Italy. She gives it a very good review. I booked it for June. It sounds delightful.

We have also booked this hotel for two nights at the end of April. I got the recommendation from Karen Brown's and have the same questions as everyone else. I am a little concerned because I have read that the Cannaregio area is not as nice as others, but I honestly don't know - our first time to Venice. However, I promise I will give you an update when we return!

To LivinginLondon, I stayed in Cannaregio district and found it full of character, little shops, restaurants.I was close to Vaporetto stop which I think was Ca D'Oro.Hotel was Locando Leon Bianco (small hotel with big rooms, nice people) so if your hotel is nearby and you don't require the upscale shopping and crowds of San Marco,you may like it too.Know what it's like to wonder about area you haven't seen so hope this helps.

As promised, I am giving you an update on the Antico Doge Hotel. I booked the hotel based upon the recommendation from Karen Brown's hotel guide and her description was accurate. It is a charming hotel, recently opened - a former palazzo of a doge was refurbished. It is located across the canal from Campo Dei SS Apostoli, on the eastern edge of the Canneregio district. It is a few minute walk to the Rialto Bridge and about 10 minutes to Piazza San Marco. While it is not in a main tourist area (say, along the Grand Canal), it is still in a great location, faces a small, pretty canal, and is in an area with lots of activity, shopping, restaurants, etc. Actually, we decided that we were happy not to be on the Grand Canal or facing the Canale di San Marco because there were too many people and too much boat traffic and not nearly as pretty as where we were.<BR><BR>We had a superior double room that faced the street. It was a decent size with a large, modern bathroom. It was decorated in some nice antique pieces and was furnished tastefully.<BR><BR>The staff was very friendly and the rates include a continental breakfast with juice, breads, meats, cheeses, cereal and yogurt. They will also give you a slight discount off if you pay cash.<BR><BR>Overall, we were very pleased with the hotel and it is a great value by Venice standards. We would definitely stay there again.<BR><BR>If you are arriving from the San Marco airport, it is very convenient to take the Alilaguna water bus (the blue route) to the Fundamente Nuove stop, which is about a 5 min walk from the hotel. It's about a 30 min ride and costs about 5 Euros per person. Just make sure you have a decent map - we used an Insight fleximap (available in most bookstores, I expect).<BR><BR>Hope this helps - have fun in Venice.

Amy,<BR>La Calcina is right on the Giudecca Canal. The view is STUNNING. As well, they have a floating terrace in front of the hotel that's right on the water where you can take your breakfast (included), dinner, or a later night drink. <BR>I can't rave enough about this hotel, and the price is great for Venice. The staff is outstanding: fluent in English, extremely helpful and friendly), the rooms are very clean, modern bathrooms, and La Calcina is in easy walking distance to San Marco, yet in an area of Venice that's not bombarded with tourists (a welcome relief at day's end!)

Thanks for the review of La Calcina. I should have been clearer in my question...I was actually inquiring if the Antico Doge was on a canal, or if you could see it from a distance. I just wanted to make sure the canal view is on a canal, vs. off in the horizon.
