I don't really need to be near the airport. Is it hard to get back an forth to Venice proper? I just want to know if it is a dump or a nice hotel. We are planning on taking a lot of day trips so I just want to make sure the hotel is bearable for the time we are there. Thanks!!

Where do you plan to go on your daytrips? In general, it's much better to stay in Venice proper, not Mestre, not the Lido, and not the airport. However, if you're not that interested in Venice itself, I guess you could stay at the airport. But, in that case, why go to Venice at all?

We will be in Venice for 4 days and traveling by train. I have heard of Vicenza and would like to go there. I have stayed in Verona in the past but just for a night. I didn't get to visit the city so that would be a nice option as well.

Then I would say to make a tentative plan to visit Vicenza. Then see how your visit to Venice goes and visit Vicenza if you feel you've seen all of Venice. It is a short ride and there's no need to buy tickets in advance.
Personally, I would feel as if I'd taken a daytrip every day if it took me 30-45 minutes to get into Venice from my hotel as it will for you. Then you still have to make your way across Venice from the train/bus terminals. If you're that interested in seeing other places, perhaps there's a Marriott hotel in Mestre, where you would have easier access to train transport, both to Venice and to other places like Vicenza or Padua.
