Varenna with a car

I'm travelling with my wife to Europe in May for our 10th anniversary, and we plan to drive from Munich to Lake Como (specifically, Varenna), and back to Munich, stopping in Switzerland along the way.

My question is this: Is it stupid to stay in Varenna if we have a car? Is there another quiet lake town that would be better?

thanks

Rob

It's not stupid; Varenna is a good choice.

OTOH, Menaggio on the opposite shore might offer more lodging options plus has the advantage of being close to Lake Lugano which, IMO, is prettier than Lake Como. (Check out Gandria and Morcote there.)

Tuck ... so do you think STAYING at one of those Lugano towns is superior to Varenna, or are you just saying the lake is prettier?

thanks!

No. I don't suggest staying in those towns - not at all. The Varenna-Bellagio-Menaggio trio is the most attractive part of Lake Como and, as I said, Varenna is a good choice; so is Menaggio.

Yes - I like Lake Lugano alot. Monte Bre and San Salvatore are scenic backdrops to the narrow fjordlike lake.
Since you'll have a car, I thought I'd point out the attractiveness of Lake Lugano and those villages.

Another thing I'll point out is, when coming through Switzerland, after San Moritz, in the Val Bregaglia, just before you cross into Italy, stop and visit this little beauty: Soglio.

Tuck ... any Varenna hotel recommendations? I tried Milano, but it's sold out ... I'd like to spend 150 Euros or less a night ...

Sorry Rob, I don't. I suggest you start a new thread with this question - I'm sure you'll get a lot of feedback...
