Which lake? Maggiore, Como, or Lugano?

I've done some prelim. searches on the boards regarding the lakes, but there are so many differing opinions on which of the lakes are the 'nicest.' I'm looking to travel where it's not too crowded, but not too secluded, either; good shops, restaurants (great food); the most breathtaking views/scenery; thinking of going ~September-ish, for roughly 4 days and would have a car. Which lake would you recommend? I'm leaning toward Como (and would be staying in Bellagio). Thanks.

If you are a Stendhal fan, Lake Como.

I think you're leaning correctly. Como will afford a lot of things to do--day trips to small towns by lake steamer, gardens, and good food. We stay in Menaggio but spend lots of time in Bellagio. You'll like it very much.

We stayed in Stresa last year on Lago Maggiore. The scenery was spectacular, but Stresa itself was a disappointment--overrun with tourists and restaurants that made Chef Boyardee (sp?) seem like haute cuisine.

I'd try Como instead.

Good luck!
