if anyone is planning a trip to yorkshire at any time please feel free to pick our brains, we have a lifetime of living in gods country and know the dales national park like the back of our hand.what to see and not see ... we have had so much help from this site travelling in europe that i wont go anywhere before i check on here ,,cheers johncandt

We plan on visiting the Yorkshire area the next time we are in the U.K. and traveling there from our rental in Kelso. Is it difficult to drive into York? How is the parking in the city? Thanks for your offer of assistance!

Thanks, johncandt. I will be in Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Peaks district the first week of June and I am very excited about it. My itinerary:

day 1--arrive Manchester, pick up rental car and drive to the village of Dent on the border between Yorkshire and Cumbria.

days 2-5: Take long walks in Dentdale area. Visit the book town of Sedbergh. Take a day trip to Ambleside in the lake district and do a long walk there.

day 6: Visit Newby Hall and Fountains Abbey. Drive to my hotel (the Bloomsbury) in York.

day 7: Spend the day in York, shopping, eating, pubbing. Go to evensong at the cathedral.

day 8: Drive to Bakewell in Derbyshire. Do a walk.

day 9: Visit Chatsworth.

day 10: Do a walk. Drive to Manchester airport hotel for departure next morning.

Any suggestions?

York can be very congested. As a rule it is best to consider using one of the park and ride bus services from the edge of the city if you go there by car.

Re your comment "traveling there from our rental in Kelso". Are you thinking of a day trip from Kelso? If so it will involve nearly four hours driving each way. Train from Berwick (about two hours each way) would be preferable.

Guy18, unless you have a really early flight, I'd consider staying in Chatsworth and then dropping the car at the airport the next morning. The car return and airport are quite small and easy to navigate. For dining in York I left you a recommendation on the "Revolting Food" thread for Melton's Too which has great veggie fare. Best of luck!

Johncandt, you're so blessed to live in Yorkshire. I'm lucky that my oldest friend lives in Knaresborough and I get to visit her often. I'm drinking my Yorkshire Gold tea just now and it just doesn't taste the same...

Thanks, mvor. I did see your recommendation, and I wrote it down. Now I have several veggie places to choose from in York.

I don't think my flight is all that early but I tend to be a worry wart about traffic, accidents, etc. I'll leave Derbyshire as late as possible on the evening before my flight and get to spend the whole day in the countryside anyway. Besides, should I feel adventurous, after my check in, I might take the train from the Manchester airport into the city. It runs all night! (This might be a good time to ask if such an outing would be safe??)

i would not try to park in york, park and ride or a better option is to stay in harrogate and go to york on the direct train.dent is a lovely place though i would guess you will be tired after a itinary like yours, im biased but i love the villages in swaledale and wharfedale, to get a feel for the dales you do need to spend the best part of a week.. for me the best spots are askrigg in swaledale, burnsall,appletreewick ,grassington and bolton abbey in wharfedale. also try to visit malham cove.. a really nice drive is from hawes to ingleton you get to see our famous three peaks[which i walked on my 60th birthday this year 24 miles ,3000ft of climbing,in 10 hrs and 50 mins! never again!]and then a nice stroll up the waterfalls at ingleton.trouble is there are so many hidden gems im still finding them after 30 years

Last time I was there Askrigg was in Wensleydale, not in Swaledale.

I disagree - sure, it makes no sense to drive/park in the center of York. By that I mean inside the city walls. But there are MANY B&amp;Bs in York (outside the walls) w/ free parking or w/ easy on-street parking. Then you would be w/i a reasonable walk or an easy bus ride to the center.

A quick search will bring up many recommendations for convenient B&amp;Bs/hotels in York.

I disagree too - and I live in Harrogate!
Harrogate/York train is slow and pricey.

John, can you recomend a private tour company that offers day trips for the moors and also for the Dales? I have been Yorkshire several times, but I do not drive while there. Last November I did take the &quot;Coastliner&quot; bus to Whitby, but now am looking to get to other, more remote places. Thanks for any information.

The first question perhaps is where from and the second question when?

Local operators provide a range of day tours. These will be more frequent from the larger towns (especially tourist centres) and in season.

An email to the local TIC in your chosen base should produce details for you.

oops! wensleydale it is.. re bus tours its not easy getting buses round the dales, it needs careful planning and you are limited to what you can see in a day if your catching buses,Pennine buses run as do several rural services ill see if i can find some bumf on them ,ill stand corrected on the harrogate to york train, staying outside the city and bussing in is probably the favorite then
