Tuscany Base Questions
What town in Tuscany is a good location to bae a trip out of if you only had four nights there?
Not interested in heading to Florence again. Have been to Orvieto, Siena, Montepulciano, Lucca and and loved them all! Didn't really have the chance to see them for that long of a period of time though- just one afternoon in Lucca and a few hours for the others.
Just loved what a saw and want to explore more!

If you are staying in the North then...I would chose Empoli. Very pretty real Italian town with great shops. Halfway between Pisa and Florence, no need for a car, well served by rail. loads of good restaurants, NO hotels though so You'll need to book La Casa di Ruggero from carefreeitaly.com Recommendations for the south will have to wait !

Our family recently returned from a trip to Italy where we only had four nights in Tuscany. I am still updating the trip report, Amazing Two Week Family Trip to Italy.
We stayed in Castellina in Chianti at Fattoria Tregole www.fattoria-tregole.com. It was a perfect location to tour through Tuscany - also the farm was beautiful and hosts very welcoming! Enjoy planning your trip!

I, too, would recommend the Chianti region; my husband & I stayed at Castellino Vicchiomaggio, just outside of Greve in Chianti, easy drive to Castellina. Wonderful location, easy for day-tripping and great wine! http://www.tuscany.net/vicchiom/pages/apart.htm

I've gotten suggestions for Pienza or Lago Trasimeno as a way to straddle both Tuscany and Umbria.
What is the best strategy, look for a center to stay in so you can do daily excursions like the spokes of a wheel?
Or move around from town to town and minimize retracing some ground?
Will accommodations, especially in smaller towns and villages, let you stay for a night or two or will they try to give you incentives to stay a week or two?
