We will be in Tuscany in June 2007. One of our party can walk some- hills, steps are NOT the problem. Standing and distance are.

We have not found that much information on use of a wheelchair in the smaller hill towns.

We were wondering if any of you who have been to some of these towns could try to think about how it would be if you were pushing a chair for PART of the time and advise on which towns would be more suitable.

Also how far out we would have to park, etc. Plus any other info you think is relevant.

We will be staying somewhere between Pisa and Florence in Palaia?

As you are asking about Tuscany, this may NOT be useful, but let me chime in with a suggestion as this is, I suspect, a challenge. Perugia (Umbria, rather than Tuscany) is more wheelchair friendly than most towns we came across. The arrangement of the parking lot for the city and the elevator access to this rather lovely city and its lack of dependency on cobblestones as the solo style of paving all made it less taxing than most.

I should also add it is a wonderful small city, lively because of the university (Europe's oldest?), the art (Perugina) and an expertise for contemporaty stained glass,chocolate and incredible food in some splendid settings. For example, Cafe Perugia, in the centre of town has three lovely restaurants stacked one of top of eachother, all different and all elevator accessible.

On your trip to Pienza (which would be wheelchair 'friendly'), I'd add dittoes for S. Quirico, Bagno Vignoni and the Abbey at S. Antimo. Montalcino would be good but not Montepulciano...

I think S. Gimignano would be okay too.

yes we are staying in tuscany. Umbria way too far away for this trip.

I spent three nights in Pienza and saw three different people in wheelchairs during that time. The town is fairly flat, unlike most hill towns, which have that name for a reason! I loved Pienza.

How is the chianti area for wheelchair access?
