I know the varieties of truffles in Italy are different from those in France, but I don't think they are so different that you could go truffle hunting in August. Truffle season in France is roughly November to the end of February.

Possibly it's the out of season discount on pigs which accounts for his previousness. We treid it really on the cheap one year, and I can still hear the manicurist hoots.

My husband and I stayed in a hotel in Spoleto last month and signed up for the Truffle package which included truffle hunting. It turned out to be a demonstration of how the truffle hunter's dog looked for and dug out truffles since, indead, it was not truffle hunting season. We were a little put out as it dawned on us what was going on, but then laughed and enjoyed it for what it was. It was interesting to watch the dogs find the 'planted' truffles.

Spoleto is full of tricks on tourists. While you caught them red-handed planting the truffles, you completely overlooked them slipping pigs into dog costumes. Dogs don't do truffles, no matter what the brochures said. Didn't you think the dog sounded familiar - but for an odd reason?

Dogs do indeed do truffles--they are truffle dogs.
Nobody knows the truffles I've seen.
oh dear.

Ah, but does anyone recall when Martha did her piece about caring for leftover truffle fragments. It was a good thing.
