France vs Italy Prices?

Hi,

Went to France last year...can I expect about the same prices for daily spending in Italy?

Are you including hotels? We have found them higher in Italy. For other things - there are so many choices you can adjust your level up or down a little if you want. But I think meals in Italy may be a little less - but perhaps it's just that I love pasta.

I was in Sardinia & Sicily in October 2005. Paris in November, 2005. Then Marseilles, Avignon & Lyon in February this year.

I thought Italy was more expensive then France especially hotels. In Italy I had lower quality hotels and paid probably 25% more for them. I was using a few B&B's in Italy to cut costs which I've not had to do in France.

I found the food to be more pricey too, but then I rarely go for the less expensive pasta dish like nytraveler.

Depends on your travel and eating habits and where you go.

I generally find for the same quality of hotels, the hotels are more expensive in Italy than France. This varies though as there are some regions in Italy where you can find very good values (generally outside of Sardinia, Rome, Venice, and Tuscany).

But for us, the food is much less expensive in Italy, even at gourmet type restaurants. The wine prices in France are very high compared to the bargains to be had in Italy.

And generally, anyplace outside of the main cities is generally less expensive.

I agree with Lori. We were in Italy and Paris in Jan/Feb. Meal prices in Italy were about 40% less.

Like the other posters, we found that it pretty much balances out--hotels were more expensive in Italy and food cost more in France.
