Then entire Trenitalia situation is horrid. Just buy whatever tickets you need when you get there. There should be no problem.

Re. Trenitalia and attempts to purchase tickets by credit card, I feel your pain. I've spent the last 24 hours pulling my hair out with frustration. My credit card issuer tells me that Trenitalia is at fault. When authorizing, my bank requested confirmation of certain details (ie. address, zip code) and received no response from Trenitalia - hence the charge was ultimately denied. Seems they aren't set up to deal with (at least some) transactions from outside Italy. Sure wish they'd put a warning on their webpage as I wouldn't have bothered. I'll be traveling with 3 small children and really don't want to deal with buying tickets in the station after my arrival. Online tickets would be ideal, but alas Trenitalia won't let it happen! Still awaiting their reply to be 'reinstated' but won't hold my breath!...

Lovesroses: One thing I can tell you is that you should be dialing 011 39 089...you're missing the zero before the 89. You can try that. The 089 area is Naples/Amalfi/Ischia area. It's possible they have their offices there.

The last 4 digits seem short, but you can't count digits in Italy. They have different lengths of numbers.

As you know...011 is Eruope 39 is Italy 089 is the section of Italy.

HI ann,

The trenitalia help number can only be accessed in Italy. It's similar to a 900 number in the US.

Hi Globe,

Try opening another account with a yahoo or hotmail address and a different CC.

Hi PB,

What can I say? Young people today just don't have the discipline to keep working at something. Back when I was a their age we had to not get tickets from trenitalia by snail mail. Took weeks.

Ira - what i cannot reconcile is that in the station machines in Italy last Jan i played around with the automatic ticketing machines in stations and they were idiot-proof and all in English and you printed out your own ticket in a matter of minutes.

yet trenitalia.com is so byzantine - why can't they just put the station system on line and make it effortless.

To: all re. Trenitalia website angst. Update: I was finally able to purchase using a VISA card. Multiple attempts with 2 different Master Cards and Amex were all denied, but VISA worked like a charm first time. The customer service response to be 'reinstated' is idiotic to say the least. I waited the 24 hour period for my resurrection only to receive an email asking me to provide my phone number which I'd already provided! Go figure!!! Anyway...I've got Roma to Napoli x 5 e-tickets in hand so quite pleased. Hooray VISA!

It's Italy. Give them a while and the ticket machines will come up to the standard of the online system.

Did you know that you can purchase tickets by cell phone as late as 5 min before the train leaves?

One other postscript to the train ticket purchasing angst.

We, too, could never get the trenitalia website to go through to an actual purchase - so we bought our Venice to Paris tickets online through SNCF. The only drawback was in having to have the tickets snail-mailed to an address in Europe.

We asked if "friends-of-friends" in Venice, whom we don't even actually know, would be willing to accept the tickets.

We were wondering what we would do if the tickets never showed up, but today we received word that they are there!

Hooray! One less thing to have to think about...
