travelling alone

Hello all, I am new here and am very excited with all the information everyone has been posting. So much so that I now want to go on a trip, unfortunately none of my friends seem to be able to get away. So where all would you recommend for a single woman to travel safely? I am currently based in Rome, so ofcourse the easiest option would be to travel somewhere in Europe, but given that I have already travelled in most of Western Europe, I felt like being a little more adventurous. How about Turkey?? And does anyone know of any tours I could join, would love for a chance to meet new people!
Thanks in advance!

If you want an active type of tour, take a look at Guerba. I went on a Swiss hiking trip w/Guerba last year and I remember seeing a tour to Turkey in the brochure. It looked like a lot of fun and prices were reasonable.

I'll bring this post to the top for you. I love traveling solo but have never gone with a tour group, so can't help with that. My suggestions would be places such as Venice, Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva region, but since you've already done much of western Europe that probably doesn't help either!

Hey
How much longer will you be in Rome? I am also a woman travelling alone in Rome and will be there at the end of October. If you are there maybe we can meet up. Since you live in Rome, do you have any suggestions for finding a furnished room for 1 person for November for under 600 Euro. Thanks.

Try a Rick Steves' tour:

I like the emphases on traveling on local mass transit, using smaller family run hotels and restaurants, the mix of ages. I like having reservations made, passes bought and local guides hired and tipped. There is ample time to go off alone as well.

Hi there - single women can travel safely in most of the places that are on most people's wish lists! Turkey is easy to travel around. Bus services are plentiful and comfortable, and there is loads to see. Or maybe just go to Istanbul for starters.

Re tours - I've travelled with Guerba and they are an excellent company. You might also want to check if Explore Worldwide have anything you like the look of.

The thing about travelling alone is that you need to relish the prospect of arriving somewhere you have never been before, and to enjoy the sometimes challenging exercise of finding out where, when and how, either with the help of a guidebook, or without.

Outside Europe but not too far, both Thailand and Malaysia are easy destinations. Sri Lanka too. Closer to Rome - have you been to Scandinavia?

Best of luck and happy travels.

Rotaka, is this your first trip to rome? do you speak any italian? Unfortunately I dont know much about rentals here, one place you can check is www.wantedinrome.com, they have flat shares... advertised in english.
fuzzylogic I have been to Thailand and luckily I was part of a group, would have been quite uncomfortable alone, specially in Bangkok! We also went to Chiang Mai which was really heaven... the nicest meals, cheapest yet most amazing hotel, and such friendly people. Malaysia and Sri Lanka definitely on my list of places to see.
And frankly I love 'discovering' a place on my own, just feel safer if its a big city and I speak the language!
Thanks for all your help everyone, will check out tours!

Thanks Susan70, unfortunately the tours at wttn are all based within Italy and I have been to most of these places already. I was hoping to stretch my wings a bit! Also I personally think the tours are quite pricey. But thanks all the same!
