Travel Notes from St. Remy and Paris
We travelled in mid-May this year.
One very pleasant surprise in St. Remy was the Hotel Sous Les Figuiers. For years we had gone to another hotel that was sold. We knew the proprietor, Denise Kuppers, of this new hotel as a painter-artist. She has done a great job decorating the property which consists of little apartments around a lovely garden of fig trees. Rooms are airy and spacious. With a tariff of about 125 euros these rooms are super.
On the negative side the heat has started already. Several days in mid-May were in the 90's. The exchange rate is also a killer. Yet, St. Remy is an eternal magnet to us.
As to Paris, The hotel Caron de Beaumarchais in the Marais continues to be a great place. It is stylish and very convenient. Note that our favorite restaurant, Le Pamphlet, reopened on June 2 alas just after our departure.
We had an exceptional Sunday brunch at Mariage Freres, the salon de the in the Marais. Not to be missed. Nice meal at Bofinger, the sea food bistro near the Bastille.
Delta Airlines seems to be getting its act together. Improved service evident though the usual two hour "Bataan Death March" through Customs still a pain.
Please remember the veterans who served on D-Day.

Thank you powellretired for writing about Hotel Sous Les Figuiers. I have booked this hotel for a few days in July and am glad to hear that it is indeed a lovely place. My husband and I are anxiously awaiting our visit to this hotel and St. Remy.

powellretired: Reading your post made me yearn to be back in St Remy! We loved our stay at the Hotel Sous Les Figuiers as well.
Last summer we had our own private garden with a fig tree off the terrace of our room (#8). From your description, it sounds as if the garden has been renovated to open up the area. Is this so?

2010,
It may be semantics. We also stayed in #8. There are seven apartments right next to each other, all with verandas overlooking the entire garden. We have known the proprietor for ten years. Have purchased her pastels in he past.
Cigalechanta,
Happily a few things do not change. One of them is the Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais in the Marais. Hope you are well and getting ready to travel.
The euro exchange rate is a killer. I have rationalized it so far in that we can remember traveling when it was .8 euros to the dollar. May make us curtail our 2008 European sojourns a bit.

So glad you all enjoyed Hotel Sous Les Figuiers! My husband and I will be staying there in August and we are so looking forward to our stay. After 5 days along the coast, we will be going to Crillon Le Brave for 3 nights and spending our last 2 nights in St Remy. Based on these reviews, I am starting to think we should spend more of our time at this hotel in St Remy than at Crillon!
