Travel Guides for Edinburgh

I will be visiting Edinburgh for the first time in February 2003. I have used Fodor's travel guide for a London trip a few years ago, but (as far as I can tell) they do not have an Edinburgh-specific guide, just a Scotland guide book. Will the Scotland book be adequate, or should I use another travel guide? What are your favorite travel guides -- in addition to Fodors, I have perused the Eyewitness books and Frommers. Any suggestions are appreciated!

You could try the timeout website and guides: www.timeout.com/edinburgh.

I was about to make the same recommendation as hanl. I found the Time Out guide to Edinburgh truly excellent when planning my visit in 2000.

Hello Heather,
While I can't compare guides, I find Peter Irvine's Scotland the Best published by Harper- Collins to be very helpful. It was given to me by a Scots gentleman who did a bit of a side business as a driver-guide in his spare time. You may also want to do a search on this board for Edinburgh. Most folk who post here are wise, wonderful and generous with their information.

Have a wonderful trip and post your travel tales when you return!

I was in Edinburgh a couple of months ago, and the guides I used most were:

Frommer's Scotland;
Rough Guide Edinburgh (compact enough to carry with you, with great detail);
Time for Food Edinburgh (restautant listings.)

Also really enjoyed the Knopf Scotland for pre-planning: great historic timeline/cultural overview/photos/etc.

There are a couple of very local ones you can pretty much only get in Edinburgh- on walks and food and stuff like that. Try Thin's in George Street for the best selection

As an non-Edinburgh native but a frequent visitor and Brit, I would say Time Out is the best guide. Informative, stylish, up-to-date (but check that you are getting the latest edition by looking in the cover for the date of publication.)
