Transport from Tarquinia to Orvieto?
I?m going on a Med cruise end of September, and we?ll be stopping for a day in Civitavecchia. Reading through this site it?s clear that Tarquinia is a place not to be missed, and so close to the port (I?ve been to Rome before). Other suggestions that crop up a lot are Orvieto and Cerveteri.
My initial plan is something like this:
Early bus or train to Tarquinia ? do the museum, necropolis and medieval section by lunch (4 hours).
Then on to Orvieto for the normal sightseeing (tell me, is the underground tour only for children? Got that impression from other posts.)
Might make the circle back through Cerveteri, but that might be too much of a detour with too little time.
Now the problem is: how do I get to Orvieto? It?s only 86km from Tarquinia, but there seems to be no direct rail link between the two judging from the trenitalia-site. Is bus transport the only option? Any advice?
Thanks

Hi Tinus,
It is a quick trip by train to Tarquinia.
It is a long trip by train from Tarquinia to Orvieto via Rome.
See www.trenitalia.com/en

From Tarquinia to Viterbo there are buses. From Viterbo to Orvieto, you can take the train via Attigliano/Bomarzo. On the return, you should connect by train in Rome, back to Civitavecchia. You certainly won't have time to do Cerveteri as well as Tarquinia and Orvieto. As it is, both Tarquinia and Orvieto in only one day will be very, very taxing.
