Train vs. Bus(coach) London to Edinburgh?

First-time visitors (early 30's) are interested in knowing the benefits / advantages / preferences to taking the train vs. a bus (coach) from London to Edinburgh in mid-August

(since we have decided to forego the car rental).

James, I have done both. Obviously, coach will be cheaper, but longer. I much prefer the train as you can get up and move around, buy beer and other refreshments in the Buffet car and purchase snacks, sandwiches and the like.

If you can afford it - TAKE THE TRAIN! Think a Greyhound from San Francisco to San Diego - or sitting in an airline type seat (granted it will be larger) for 7 to 8 hours.

Coaches are fine for shorter trips - but not for 400 miles. The train is better hands down - UNLESS budget is a big consideration.

Time and money. The train is quicker. The bus is cheaper.

I was in Waverely Station (train) in Edinburgh just last week. Took ScotRail up to North Berwick. Compared to a very long bus ride, the extra money would be funds well spent for me.

The train. And there are several reasons to book your tickets early. First, because if you order at least 3 weeks out you qualify for an apex super-saver, which is about 1/3 of the price you'll pay if you "walk up" at Kings Cross station.

Next, you wish to travel to Edinburgh during the Festival/Tattoo and the trains or buses will be quite busy, so booking in advance is a necessity.

Have a wonderful time--you'll LOVE Edinburgh!
