There is no train from Stranraer to Edinburgh. You would take the train to Glasgow Central, walk to Glasgow Queen Street station, then take another train to Edinburgh.
OR - take a train to Ayr (a much less frequent option - runs every 2 hours), then another train to Edinburgh

Book a Belfast to Edinburgh SailRail ticket at www.virgintrains.co.uk for £30 and have tickets sent to you for £7.50 anywhere in the world.
This means Stena Line from Belfast Port to Cairnryan and their integrated transfer bus to Ayr, then train to Edinburgh.
Or buy in Belfast at major NIR travel centres.

Ignore janis is jerk Odin.
DrG, you could do some kind of ferry and train combination as per above comments, but why not fly? Chances are it would save considerable time that you could then spend seeing and doing things in Edinburgh. It might even be cheaper as well.
