Cornwall to Edinburgh

I have been reading about train travel and it was suggested that one could get on a train in Penzance in the early evening and arrive in Edinburgh the next morning by booking a sleeper. Is this really a viable option? Are you really refreshed and ready to explore?

This isn't really an option, it is a long way from Penzance to Edinburgh and would take more than one night. The sleeper from Penzance would take a night to get to London Paddington you would then have to take another train from Kings Cross (taking a further 4-5 hours), or sleeper from Euston to get to Edinburgh. There is no direct sleeper, there are direct trains operated by Virgin to Glasgow from Cornwall, or you could go by normal train to London and then on to Edinburgh but this option would mean being on the train all day, rather than night the train taking about 10-12 hours.

For train ticket prices and timetables see: www.qjump.co.uk.

For details of train companies and the UK rail network see: www.nationalrail.co.uk

I admit it sounds too good to be true. I quote
"after a full day's sightseeing in Penzance, you can board the Intercity 125 at 1630 to return to London by 2222 and transfer leisurely to London's Euston station to board a Caledonian Sleeper at 2340. You'll arrive in Edinburgh the next morning at 0717."
BRITAIN BY BRITRAIL 2003

I hadn't thought of it that way around, it would work as stated, but would involve 2 trains and a short transfer across London by Tube or Taxin rather than 1 direct train.

At certain times of the year, there are a couple of day through trains direct from Penzance to Edinburgh by Virgin Rail. Departures at 8.20 am and 9.15 am and take around 10-1/4 hours. But there's no night sleeper train on that route.
