Train travel from Rome to Amalfia Coast
Hello,
We'll be dropping off our car rental on a Saturday at the FCO airport. Our reservations down in Positano do not start until the next day. We figured that we'd head down there on the Saturday and have a full day starting on Sunday. I'm looking for your advise on how to use the train system to get down there and also if you have any advise on a reasonably place to stay right before entering the expensive Amalfia Coast area?

Hi,
From FCO take the shuttle to Rome TE. From there you take the train to Naples. From the Naples train station you take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento.
If you wish, you can stop at Pompeii on the way to Sorrento.
If you search "Sorrento and hotel" you will get lots of advice

Thank you ira for your reply. I'm assuming that when you said to take the shuttle to Rome TE , that TE means the train station. Do you know where it is( how far it is ) from the airport? Are we able to purchase tickets for the Eurostar? Would you advise taking this train. It seems like it could be a long day of travel.
thanks, again

Hi cemcem,
Rome has two train stations. You want Roma Termini (TE).
The shuttle runs every 1/2 hr and takes 1/2 hr. There is a train station just outside the arrival building at FCO. You can buy your tickets to Naples when you buy your ticket to Rome.
Train schedules and fares are at www.trenitalia.com. The Circumvesuviana website is http://www.vesuviana.it/orario_ol/orari.asp
It's a 1 3/4 hr ride from Rome to Naples on the ES*.
