seriously, how did some of these people get picked?>>>
They claim it's random. They only ask name, address and occupation. They don't ask what you plan to do up there.
If you have a British address you can use, you too can register.

>>>there's a Irish guy sitting in a paddling pool, covered in part fake blood/part real blood from family and friends reading poetry<<<
Wow, I didn't think there would be a literal bloodbath. I might go check that one out.
(I saw the ironing lady- it was a cordless iron she used. She's Hazel at 12am. The American (?) who handled the drunks is Lana at 1am)
I think the woman whose husband died in the avalanche is one of my favourites, just because she was very normal and nice and funny. I loved her boots.

omg, here's the description from bloodbath man's bio:
"If you can imagine a near naked, middle aged, 6' 2", tattooed, skinhead, sitting in a small paddling pool, on top of a seven metre high plinth, in the heart of London, bathing in a couple of litres of theatrical blood, mixed with a significant amount of real blood that has been extracted from my closest friends and family, then you have pretty much got the picture."

CW,
I had heard that plinters were picked randomly. My comment was me just ranting at how some of the people seemed to waste a whole hour doing nothing, like the girl eating breakfast and just taking in the view. I mean seriously, she could have done that on the bottom of the square!

The dude up there now brought his own band (they are on the ground, not the plinth) and he's singing some horrible indie rock into a megaphone. The musicians aren't half bad though.

The current lady is tossing down books. There are a few scraggly people hanging about- the sorts you would expect to find at 1am on a Monday night.
Their reaction to getting books?
"But I don't know how to read."
The crowds in the square are better than the plinters half the time.

Hardcore performance art going on right now. And some of it with a Canadian theme-
"While facing Canada House I’ll draw a map of Canada, but rather than draw its borders, the country’s landscape will be represented by the names of randomnly selected army personnel who have died in the Afghanistan war"
Not many people realize that Canada has suffered a disproportionately high casualty rate in Afghanistan, so I actually appreciate her doing this (even if it is at 4am and no one is watching)

I agree, Apres.
The anon woman now is nicely turned out, 7.8 on my scale of 10. I can't rate her vocal quality or content because I'm only able to glance at it occasionally while at work, but the crowd is being polite and attentive.

Back up in time to see a thin man in long black coat and Dr. Demento or death or alien mask, evidently a crowd-pleaser, being replaced by a pleasant woman who's chatting about the view. People have such varying notions of stagecraft.
