I know that a lot of Fodorites prefer to stay in Salthill when they're visiting Galway. And, before our trip last year, I vaguely remember reading about pubs in that area.

My daughter's flat is on the far side of Salthill. Most of the friends she's made so far seem to be more into rock than traditonal music (imagine that among 20somethings!). But I'll be there on two Saturday nights and would love to find a pub with great traditional music. I know of a couple of pubs in the city centre that we could go to if need be. But it would be so nice to find something in Salthill. Any suggestions?

Sorry, I can't help with Salthill; but I would guess that you'll find at least one Trad Irish music session in one of the Pubs along the Promenade. If you're there in Jul or Aug you can find afternoon Trad Irish music sessions in at least 2-Pubs in Galway's Pedestrian area (one is Taaffes, there's another just across the walk).

I believe the other pub is The Quays (keys)located on the West end of Quay Street nearest the Jurys Inn where the Wolf Tone Bridge crosses the River Corrib. The Spanish Arch is there and the Latin Quarter runs from the Jurys, up toward Eyrie Square.

We've been there is April and Feb, and both times there was live music at the Quays.

As Ned said, there's another pub directly across from Taafe's. The name is something like Tigh Cioli. I know that's not quite right. Anyway, we spent a Sunday evening there last March.

I'll be there in March again. And I have no doubt that I'll be able to find music. Sure would like to find some in Salthill though so that we don't have to worry about getting back out there at the end of the evening!

If not, my inclination is to try An Pucan as that's where we just happened to hit what was, for me, the most enjoyable music we found in Ireland last year. And that was on a Thursday night!

CAPH52, I love traditional Irish music. I also love "Celtic bluegrass". Using the web I mentioned above, I chose some pubs which sounded like our kind of place. I printed out the ones which were convenient to where we were staying. That way I knew where to go for music each night. As you probably know, some pubs don't have music every night.

It REALLY made for great trip memories.


Of course you can also ask once you arrive in Ireland, just in case something spontaneous has come up.

Enjoy your music and pubbing and craic. My favorite pubs were:

Greene's in Ballyvaughan. A little place that was crammed with music-lovers. We had seats as we got there early but otherwise it was standing room only. This is a good way to meet people! A local lady was standing by the musicians, and when a ballad was being sung, she shushed the crowd. It was fantastic!

I also loved Matt Malloys Pub in Westport, County Mayo, where we always ended up every night even after nosing around in other pubs. The last night there were fantatic musicians playing there at Matt Malloys. I was thrilled. I couldn't believe I was there! I wish I was still there...

You will find your own favorite experiences. Now I play my CD's when I need the Irish music "fix"...I like the Chieftains and I also like the McKrells.

We liked Matt Malloy's too. But the night we were in the town centre (went to the harbour area the other night we were in Westport), the craic was actually better at the Porterhouse! Just happened to be a livelier set of musicians there that night!

CAPH - On the salthill side of the Corrib is my favorite pub in Ireland. "The Crane" it is called - it's on Upper Dominick St. Go upstairs at about 8 or 9 pm for superb Trad music.
