'But I think we need to know what Italian residents say about this not some Belgian curmudgeon.

What would Italians do? Not Belgians in Italy.'>

whathi - my apologies for trying to be cute - and I did not know if you had been to Italy for sure.

But still what Italians do is the key and your experience there with Italians shows that.

And pardon the curmudgeon thing - I mis-used it with you:

Old, cranky, and more than a little stubborn, a curmudgeon is the gruff, grey-haired neighbor who refuses to hand out candy at Halloween and shoos away holiday carolers with a "bah humbug!" As fickle and stubborn as the type of person it describes, curmudgeon comes to us without a history, its origins undisclosed.

As you are not 'old' or 'grey-haired' I think it don't applies to you.

Sorry!

What: I seriously believe you've suffered from oxygen deprivation.
This was the quote you firs cited as proof that goddess was referring to you:

You: 'You mean the USniversal rule ?
I tip 0.'

Answer I got from OP included :

OP: 'Still confused about the car tipping issue. Don't know what Belgians have to do with it.'

She was responding to Pal's wry post about Belgians. Hence "Don't know what Belgians have to do with it." IOW, "WTF are you talking about." It had nothing to do with you.

Now you want to cite a later post as proof your first comment. LOL. Did you by any chance spend a lot of time at high altitudes?

"Boy, and people say the Lounge is vicious! Loungers are pussycats compared to some people here!"

There is only one person making the Europe forum unpleasant.

"I've been told by several waiters in Italy that the coperto and the servizio also go to the owner. I'm still looking to find one waiter who says he or she receives it from the owner."

That is disgusting if the owner is keeping the tip.

Sure it does, because neither is the tip. Our friends from beyond the pond tend to confuse tip and service charges, which are, to us in Europe, two entirely different things. It's of course the owner who takes the coperto and service charges and pays the staff's wages and insurance, the laundry bill and dishwashing detergent etcetera.

I know what it costs to run a small restaurant, but certain people on this board clearly think these folks are living the good life.

Just on Corrie (Coronation Street - long-running British soap) someone asked cabbie how much -said 4 p 80 - guy have him a fifer and said 'keep the 20 p' and cabbie said "Are you sure>"

Very telling such as Corrie portrays typical working class Brits!

But to be fair at the Rovers' local pub, many regulars say keep the change when paying for their drinks by liberally rounding up.

@ goddesstogo: You are, IMO, to be commended for having posted a question to make sure you were knowledgeable about local tipping etiquette. You found one source for the information you requested, thursdaysd provided another source, and several Italian Fodorites (and other Fodorites have told you) that tips in Italy are, at most, nominal round-ups. You have also discovered one of the great Fodorite ironies: In threads that focus on proper tipping etiquette, some of our fellow posters display their least gracious and most insulting sides. So just a thought: You might want to consider the option of declining to comment on their responses....

I got back from Italy yesterday and to my surprise many of the restaurants did not even have a line on bill for leaving a tip when paying by credit card. I was surprised mainly because I had forgotten, it has been over 3 years since I last visited. We left a cash tip sometimes when we thought the service was exceptionally good, but I could see no one was expecting it.

We took a car to Malpensa from our hotel in Bellagio and we did not leave a tip. The ride was not inexpensive by US standards - although I realize that this may not the 'right' mindset to have.

My son and I went to the hairdressers and I was so pleased with our transformed appearances that I left a 20% tip as is common in the US. The guy thanked us profusely, he was not expecting it.

Yes. This is my plan. Thanks for the post, kja.

(But just one last little aside for Pal because we both watch Corrie. When patrons pay for their drink in the Rovers and they say to the barmaid 'and one for you', they're actually giving her a tip, not expecting her to drink a drink. Otherwise, they'd have barmaids conked out on the floor mid-day.)

"How much do you tip your Accountant or Doctor?"
__________________________
When the bellhop goes to college for 8 years (doctors) to learn their profession, takes tests for certification in order to practice, and then takes continuing education courses, I will stop tipping them.

-I have been told by some that they have seen a line for entering a tip at the doctor's office for certain elective cosmetic procedures regardless of whether they were performed by a physician or nurse. This is in the US.

I don't tip in Italy, so thank you to anybody doing so in my place to compensate. I have generally had excellent service, and there was never any hint of begging as in the case of "My name is Bruce" or "Is everything perfect or can I do anything extra?" like in the United States. I am really glad that countries are completely different, but it is a shame that not everybody understands it.
