Validation means that you need to get your ticket stamped by a machine to make it "valid". Many transit authorities use blank tickets that could be used any day. The stamp/ validation makes them valid for that specific trip or day.

Validation machines can be in trams and buses near the entrances. Or on subway or urban rail systems usually in the "lobby" before you take the escalators to the platforms.
Some systems literally stamp the date and time on the ticket. Others "eat" the ticket and read the magnetic strip and spill it out again.
Or you have tickets with chips inside. You validate those usually by holding them near chip readers. Those systems often also require it that you not only "check in" when you board a tram or bus. But also to "check out" when you get off! If you forget the latter, it will often incur a penalty surcharge next time you use it.

Some public transport networks require you to "stamp" your ticket only once when you start your journey.
Others also require it for each transfer you make.

It pays off to visit the respective transit authority's website to get an idea how it is handled.
And yes, it can be confusing.
