We stayed at the Hotel Windsor and were very happy with it. I believe it's ranked 3 stars.

Always challenging to answer a question like this -- don't know if you mean

"I don't know where to start"

or

"I have looked through a number of sources, and now I want some personal experiences on which I can base a choice".

I would probably not have Nice in my top five (destination cities) on the Cote d'Azur. You'll get lots of ideas on that, and I have only stayed in (or visited) some of the leading better candidates.

Useful resources would include:

Fodors Rants and Raves (see the word Hotels at the top of the forum?) - - they list 75 hotels. Here's their introduction ... from "Lodging Overview".

=========

If you've come from elsewhere in France, you'll notice a sharp hike in hotel prices here. In coastal resorts the majority of visitors seem to value proximity to the sea over cachet, and you'll often find yourself far from the land of Provençal cottons and cozy country inns. The decor here is a peculiar hybrid - vaguely Jazz Age, a little Hollywood - that falls into a loose category known as Côte d'Azur style. St-Tropez's rates vie with those in Monaco. In Cannes, the grand hotels are big on prestige (waterfront position, awe-inspiring lobbies, high-price sea views) and weak on swimming pools, which are usually just big enough to dip in; their private beaches are on the other side of the busy street, and you'll have to pay for access, just as nonguests do.

The hotels in the hills provide the kind of charm you'd expect of this region. There are plenty of sophisticated inns with excellent restaurants and friendly mom-and-pop auberges. The farther north you drive, the lower the prices.

============

www.karenbrown.com

and Yahoo lists five different mega-sites

Cannes Hoteliers Associations - Cannes - directory of hotels and vacation residences.

Hotels in Moustiers - Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Hotels in Nice - Nice - search for hotels in the Nice area.

Hotels of the Mediterranean - Nice

Nice RealHotels - Nice - directory of hotels and guest houses in the Greater Nice area, including Cannes and other French Riviera cities.

under http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/Countries/France/
Regions/Provence_Alpes_Cote_d_Azur/Travel_and_Transportation/
Lodging/Hotels/Directories/

Best wishes,

Rex
Hotel West End (it's a Best Western, but you'd never know it) next to the Negresco was very lovely. Terrific location,service. The room was a little small but we were 3 people. Great access to the beach and shops and near the "uncrowded" area of the Palais Anglais.

Judy,
You can walk there from the train station--they may have a website with directions (try windsorhotel.com or hotelwindsor.com?). We were there with our teen-age daughter and had a triple--very good size. Also, the spa on the top floor is very nice--steam room and sauna, if my memory serves me right. The restaurant in the garden is a beautiful setting, but the breakfast was overpriced and not worth it. Otherwise, it was a very good value--good location and very clean and helpful staff.

Have a great time.

Bill,
We stayed at the Hotel Windsor this summer and really enjoyed it. Each room is decorated by an artist and some are quite unusual. I found the breakfast to be a great value for the area, Seems like it was 8 euro includes coffee, croissants, granola, fruit and juice. Thought the hotel was a good value. Colvin, one of the managers is a very personable character. Beware of pick pockets in Nice.
Regards,
Vic Noir
The Windsor website in www.nice-hotel-windsor.com They are a 3-star, so is the Gounod, & the Bryce Tulip Inn.

Go to the Nice Tourism Website for more hotels in your price/size range. I don't remember the URL, but if you do a search for Nice, France you will find it.

We stayed at the Gounod last year and would highly recommend it, the breakfast was excellent and hot (scramb eggs, sausages, ham, several bread procucts, cereal, cheese, juice, tea, milk).

Are staying at the Windsor this year, because of their beautiful garden, but have heard from friends who stayed there that the breakfast if nothing to write home about. For the same price you can get better at a cafe or on the beach. Service is supposed to be excellent though.

Try the Mercure Hotel Chain. They are very reliable and have hotels all over France.
