ISO Hotel on Côte D'Azur-March 07

We had thought to go back to the place we stayed in Rocquebrune for four nights but they are booked for two of the four nights. Since I don't care to hopscotch hotels does anyone have any suggestions for hotels on the Côte D'Azur? In March we don't need a pool or anything like that (though with the weather we have had it might be possible to swim in March). We don't want to stay in Nice though will be visiting there and flying into the airport. Looking to spend about 100-125€. TIA.

Do you want to be right on the coast, or would a bit inland do? If so, check out the small town of Valbonne, south of Grsse and north of Mougins. There's a nice little 2*hotel on the town square: Armoires, rooms from 91 to 159€. Outside the town, on the road to Nice, is La Bastide de Valbonne, with rooms from 95 to 145€. The Bastide was built only a few years ago, while Armoires dates from the 17th century.

Valbonne has yet to be discovered by foreign tourists and is quite charming, with excellent small shops and art galleries.

Underhill, thanks. We will look into it. If we wanted to be on the coast do you have any recommendations? TIA.

How about the Hotel Welcome in Villefranche sur Mer? Otherwise, hotels in your price range may be hard to come by...coastal hotels tend to command high prices.

Valbonne, however, is only a 15-minute drive from Cannes and its sandy beaches, or Antibes, or Cap d'Antibes, or Juan-les-Pins. Not recommendtions for hotels there, however, as we usually stay inland or in Nice. How about Menton?

Underhill, I can't decide where to stay so I will mull it over the weekend. In the train station on the way home I leafed through Travel & Leisure's hotel issue. In one of their recommended hotels we could stay in Beaulieu-sur-Mer for a mere 1260 a night. Not sure whether it was Euros or dollars as if it mattered!

Another vote for Hotel Welcome - we were there last March and enjoyed watching the harbor - at night while relaxing and in the morning before the chaos of the day.

have fun!

While you're mulling, have a look at the Brise Marine on St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. It's evidently a bit dated as to room decor, but the location is great.

And don't forget the Hotel du Cap in Antibes, where only cash is accepted!

AGM, not sure if you have decided on a hotel yet, but we have stayed at the Prince de Galles in Menton and enjoyed the hotel, the view and the location. In fact, we are going back for a few days in July. It is very reasonably priced. Ask for a sea facing room - they all have balconies. Another suggestion is the Hotel Napoleon in Menton. It has been recently renovated. It is closer to the Italian border than the Prince de Galles and is a bit more expensive.

Enjoy your trip!

We booked at the Hotel Welcome. Being on the water was the draw here. We have our fingers crossed that the unseasonably warm winter will translate to a warm week on the Côte D'Azur. The first year we went to Provence in March we had lunch outside at a sidewalk cafe in our shirtsleeves. It would be nice to repeat that experience.

Villefranche-sur-mer is a great place to stay! The Hotel Welcome has beautiful views of the harbor and is near many restaurants. Some rooms have a small balcony facing the harbor. It is a convenient location for visiting other areas on the Riviera.

Marianna (and anyone else), Do you have any specific recommendations for restaurants either in Villefranche-sur-Mer or along the Coast? My folks stayed in St Jean Cap Ferrat last year and my mom's only advice was not to go to the shoe store. Not helpful but typical.
