I think I am SICK. My husband & I are going to Thailand & Bali this October & I am already researching our Sept 08 Portugal trip. We were in Portugal in 89 & I knew I'd go back there-this site is a wealth of information-Chris

Matt from England - I noticed that your initial list of Things to do Around Lisbon was first posted in January of 2006. Would you still give the same advice today as far as where to go and what to see?

Today is 07/07/2007. I've been watching The 7 wonders show, live from Benfica stadium in Lisbon.
The Portuguese part had a lot of Portuguese cultural references including Mariza, Camane, Carlos do Carmo and Rui Veloso. The 7 Portuguese wonders were elected as:
Monastery of Alcobaça
Monastery of Jeronimos (Lisbon)
Pena Palace (Sintra)
Monastery of Batalha
Castle of Obidos
Tower of Belem (Lisboa)
Castle of Guimaraes
The international part is just begining presented by Sir Ben Kingsley and with a lot of intrenational figures, including Kofi Anan and high level delegations of the 21 countries represented.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, google "the new seven world wonders". Wherever you are try to find a TV station boadcasting the show.

The Monastery of Jeronimos is one of the most beautiful places I've been to find tranquility of the soul. The soothing colours, the flowing design and the silence kept me there for hours.
We were lucky and visited it on a day with few tourists.

Matt, Lobo, Sher,
Judging from the volume of emails it seems that you are the experts on Lisbon.
Please may I ask - have any of you heard of a tour company called 'Tours for You'? I have been unable to find independent reviews on them. We are looking for tours of Lisbon and they do private tours. Or would you have any recommendations for tour companies that do guided tours of Lisbon and/or Fatima.
Thanks so much.
(Matt, just emailed you - please ignore the email)

Hi KeenanDec.
Matt and Lobo are the experts on Lisbon.
There are several others that live there and contribute.
Unfortunately, my DH and I do not do tours. We usually do it ourselves, so I cannot comment on Tours For You.
We did consider a walking tour of Lisbon called Inside Lisbon, but never made it.
Maybe someone will chime in and help so I bring this to the top.
You will love Portugal, I am sure.

IMHO, I would not take a tour to Fatima if that is all this particular tour consists of.
We did do I side trip to Fatima while we were touring. I am not strongly religious but do have a Catholic background and I was curious.
There really is not a lot to see there and I looked at the tour and I think that there are so many other places that you might enjoy a tour more.
If Fatima would be included with a stop somewhere else like Batalha or Alcobaca, I would go for it.

Hi,
I've posted this in a separate thread but didn't get any answers. Hoping for better luck here!
We (two couples with two toddlers) are going to be in Lisbon from Nov 21-25 - our first time there.
1) Has anyone stayed in or have any experience of the Hotel Duas Nacoes?
2) How long do you think it would take us to get from there to the airport (we have a flight out of there at 7:45am)
Thanks in advance!

With GREAT excitement I've poured over these Lisbon threads (3)...thank you (Matt; Lobo et all)for offering up the many many possibilities while in town.
It's been years since I've been abroad (thank you children) and I will be travelling with my husband on business mid Sept 07. He'll be busy daily, while I will be free to explore on my own.
I am sure, based on the offerings put forth on these threads, that solo explortation of the city is fine on my own (correct me if I'm wrong), I'm planning taxi and metro travel primarily...does anyone have experience or suggestions particularly suited to visiting alone?
