Now that my trip is finalized, and we leave in just over a week, I am trying to figure out exactly how to spend our time in Lisbon. We are arriving in Lisbon early in the morning on a Thursday. The next day we are planning to take the train to Sintra and spend the day there. Then we have Saturday in Lisbon as well. On Sunday we head to Evora. So, how does this sound for a start:

Thursday - Castle Sao Jorge and the Gulbenkien Museum (taxi or metro), what else should we do that day?

Friday - Sintra

Saturday - Belem and more?

As you can see, I need some help here!

Susan

We FINALLY completed our travel plans and now I could use some specific route help. We will be renting a car in Evora 9:30 on a Monday morning and we need to return the car by 5 that same day in Caldes da Rainha. From there we will take a taxi to Obidos where we are staying the night. The plan is to get to the coast (Nazare?). We are looking for advice on the best route to take and would like to know if there is anything we should try to see on the way. (or close to our way!) Thanks, Susan

And a final question on restaurants. I have read through the LDC threads but we the LDC will be in NY while we are in Lisbon. And when we travel we like to eat in casual places during the day but like to splurge on wonderful restaurants for dinner. I have been doing some research and have come up with the following choices for Lisbon - we have four nights there:

A Travessa - I think we are set on this one
Olivier
A Salgardeiras - suggested by our hotel but I can't find any information on it.
Lisboa a Noite
Doca Peixe - I think we are leaning towards this restaurant.
Eleven
Which four would you choose?

We have a reservation at Fialho for our night in Evora. And in Obidos, our hotel only suggested the restaurant IN the hotel - Cozinha das Rainhas. Any suggestions for Obidos?

And one final dining question - what is a good time to make a dinner reservation? We tend to eat late. Last year we were in Spain and none of our dinner reservations was for before 10 pm. But a couple of months ago were were in Dublin and we found that people there ate much earlier - our reservations were for between 8:30 and 9. What is a common time for making a dinner reservation at a nice restaurant? As I said, we prefer to eat late - it gives us more time to enjoy the day sightseeing. Thanks, Susan

Lisbon's Campo Pequeno Bullring re-opened last year after a deep face lifting, including a small shopping center and restaurant are in the underground.

During 100 years, the building served only as a bull ring, but since the re-opening, apart from the bull fights themselves, it has been the venue for TV shows, fashion showns and other events.
For those who enjoy the building and the sense of history, but do not appreciate bullfights, there will be fine displays of horsemanship (no bulls, no blood, lusitanian horses only). These kind of shows where common only in Queluz Palace gardens, but there are 2 showns scheduled to Campo Pequeno in April. I think that if they are a success, there will be more of these showns during the summer, and they have all the potencial to become another Lisbon's attraction. Insh'Allah

This is my first time posting. I'm taking my girlfriend on a surprise trip to Lisbon over Memorial Day Weekend (arriving morning of May 25 - departing morning May 28) with plans to propose.

We loved prior trips to Spain and I'm now trying to learn about all things Portugese. I'm working my way through these incredibly helpful posts, but I'd love to hear if anyone has some particularly romantic suggestions for hotels, dinners, and other activities, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks in advance!

Hi jrj50,
My hubby & I will be in the area too at the same time as you guys. I am now obsessively planning/researching our trip. The LDC posts have been so helpful esp. the trip reports so just read through it. Glad to see it become active again, I wonder if Lobo & Matt will host an LDC dinner while we're there. From the posts it sounds like the LDC & meeting Matt/Lizzy & Lobo/Gertrude are the highlight of several Fodorites trips.
Anyway, are you planning on going to the Algarve area at all or staying close to Lisbon? If going to Algarve area, I have found what looks like a romantic hotel (Vila Gale Praia)& some romantic trips (hire a private boat that will take you around the coast, some private secluded beaches & grottoes, bring a picnic & maybe propose on one of those beaches...???) I can suggest for that area. If you're staying close to Lisbon, I will keep an eye out for ideas as I research the rest of our trip there & will let you know through this post. Good Luck, so excited for you!

hello.

the portugal/lisbon threads have been a great help.

my girlfriend and i are flying into lisbon in late may and have 20 days to spend in portugal. the plan so far is to spend some time in lisbon, hire a car and drive down the coast to the algrarve, then possibly seville, up and around to porto. pretty loose plan as i 'm sure you can tell.

i had a few questions for matt/lobo or anyone else with knowledge of the area.

1)is it worth flying to madeira for a few days?

2)my girlfriend a i enjoy secluded beaches. any chance of still finding these in the algrave in may? where?

3)after leaving sevilla, what should our next destination be?

4)is it easy to just come across good accomodations in portugal or does everyone recommend booking ahead? (ie can we just grab the car in portugal, buy and map and go?)

any assistance is much apprectiated.

thanks
roman

Aveiro has a very estimulating atmosphere. Mostly in the technology field, more and more students are heading to Aveiro instead of the more traditional Universities (Lisbon and Coimbra).

There are two recent articles about Portugal that I received through a travel email I read.

Anne Banas of Smarter Living writes about Escapes Under $500. And two of her most recent articles were about Portugal's castle country and the Alentejo.

I enjoyed them both as there is very little written about Portugal as a destination. And when there is an article it seems to be about Lisbon more often than not. But it is getting more popular so we better hurry up and return before you are overrun with Americans.

Hi Sher, do you have a link to the articles you cited, or were they only available within the e-mail? I'm getting ready to hurry up and return in August.

Hi Nikki

I am not good at that tinyurl thing. If you Google Anne Banas and Smarter Living, it will bring up the site.

One was from May 31 and one from April 26.

I think you will find them interesting.

Where are you going? If you have the time email me.

I haven't been able to get anywhere except Palm Beach and Fire Island. It is travel, I guess, but not the kind I would like to do.

There's a new reason to visit Lisbon. Since yesterday the Berardo Collection of Modern Art is opened to the public.
The approx 250 works (paintings and photos) are estimated to worth in excess of 400 million USD.
Entrance is 5 euros, with discounts for students and free for children.

Today I had the chance to walk Rua Augusta all the way from the archway to Rossio. Oh boy, I didn't know there were so many tourists, and seems that all of them gathered in Lisbon.
I like to see so much excitement in my town.

Hello Lobo,

With the Euro being so high and Lisbon being cheaper than its neighbours, I have no doubt you'll be seeing more and more tourists in your beautiful city. But how will they all fit on the tram to the castle?

They can either run after a tram to spare 1 euro or run after a taxi to spare 5 euros. IMHO runing after a taxi is better value for money.
