I stayed at the George Hotel on a solo trip to London right after 9/11. I needed an inexpensive place near the train station and Piccadilly line for two nights and as a solo woman, some place safe. The George fit perfectly. My room was clean, actually a good size, the breakfast area was nice, internet access. I loved Cartwright Gardens. I was in the basement so it wasn't overly bright, the breakfast was a standard English b'fast.

I found the location very convenient. I was only in the hotel to sleep. For what I wanted that weekend it was perfect -- inexpensive, clean, central, safe -- I would stay there again.

Don't forget to look for reviews on tripadvisor.com, as well.

It was in 2001 and I paid a little less than 100 DOLLARS. I did not share a bathroom, and it came with breakfast. The room was long and narrow, a small TV that got the standard BBC channels, no cable. Staff was pleasant, breakfast was standard and hot. I was in the back basement. As I said it would not be my choice with my family or if I was going to stay in the room. I got in late Friday night, spent Sat. and Sat. evening with a friend, and left before breakfast Sunday to catch a plane. Perfect for that schedule.
