what a great trip report from my friend Taconic Traveler!
Laughed out loud so much and am going to follow many of the specific recommendations on our upcoming trip.
Umbertide reminds me of trying to pronounce "Cafayate" in NW Argentina, where the only way I could was by remembering that it was like saying "choco latte" (except it's cafa zhattay!))

Hi Skatedancer!! So good to hear from you!!
If you have any other questions about these parts of Italy, I'd be glad to try to help!
I was in Cafayate once, and finally learned how to say it!! (Yeah it does sound like "choco latte")
Right now, planning our trip to Paris and the Dordogne with the same group! Leaving September 19, and looking forward to a lot of fun
What are your travel plans exactly?

Hmmm, I was skimming down to post how much we had also enjoyed our trip to Montone, for my 60th, a little over a year ago.
I am sorry to expose your secret, but really, this wonderful town, with its beautiful convent museum and excellent restaurants, deserves visitors. Only those who are willing to stay off the beaten track, and drive up and down a very steep hill or small mountain for each day trip will go there.
I can recommend the very comfortable, friendly, and moderately priced (by anyone's standards) Hotel Fortebraccio. Montone is a lovely place and I'm so glad we stayed there.
I read about it on slowtrav.com. I believe one of their regulars owns a house there, maybe the one the OP rented.

lol skatedancer - my sojourn at the italian language school must have worked because I can pronounce both of those, no problem.
tfi - [because I still read your name as Tuscan Feed Lit] i must bookmark Montone. I looked at that hotel and it looks lovely. and it shows what value you can still get in Italy if you stay out of the main tourist centres.

Fear not, TFL, because Zeppole beat you to it, and mentioned the name of the town way back in the beginning.
anyway, I told everyone the name of the Locanda, and so Montone was always only one Google away!
I'm glad you've been there and enjoyed it. I have emailed with the lady on slowtrav who owns a house there. it is larger than the one we rented, and looks very nice.
there is also another tiny house, just outside the walls that looks very nice and has great views, which ours did not.
Annhig: You would really like Montone, it was just exactly the perfect place for us, and I dream about a return. that whole Upper Tiber Valley is not so very well known, and brings great rewards!

taconictraveler -- I emailed you twice recently, and wonder if I have the wrong address? Would you send me an email when you get a chance so we can reconnect?
We are going for two weeks -- Venice, Dolomites, Cinque Terre, Tuscany (four nights Montepulciano and two in Florence), one night in Padua before flying home from Venice.
I bookmarked this thread because of your Bologna restaurant before reading through the rest of it carefully and then was so happy to realize it was written by you. We only will be able to do a quick stop in Bologna, so I want to make sure we hit a bullseye with the meal!
