Thanks for 20 Matchless Days in Umbria and Tuscany almost without a hitch

great report - so glad I found it.
may I claim my $1 reward? - i suggest that Umbertide is pronounced umberTIde - the emphasis on the penutlimate syllable which is an "ee" sound as in feet. the last syllable is a simple "e" sound - not quite "say" or "day" but close.
i too would like to know the name of your tiny Umbrian village, and how you found your perfect accommodation.

It's a pleasure to read your excitement over seeing the artworks of Italy. I look at some travel reports that note "we went to the church" and that's it. I'd almost lost faith anybody went to Italy to appreciate its artistic treasures anymore.
The entire area around the hills of Montefeltro and on into Le Marche is filled with beautiful, charming towns, artistic treasures, stunning scenery and great food. You might want to go back some time.

Zeppole: Yes, I DO want to go back as often as possible, but as we are getting older those trips may not happen as often as in the past. I would LOVE to see Le Marche, and lots more of Umbria, and Turin, and Albi and I could go on and on, as I realize more and more how very different different parts of Italy are. I am also mad about Quattrocento Art, and have had the pleasure of going to Florence three times with my friend the Art History major, who has taught me a lot!
Annhig and Dina: the strangely spelled town of Umbertide is also strangely pronounced. The best I can do is as follows, to imitate the people who live there: "um - BARE - today" We ended up just saying "umBAREtoday, umBAREtomorrow, umBAREyesteday..." in order to try to remember what we heard the residents saying. That may not be perfect, but it's the best we could do. Great little town, with a very good Wednesday food market.
As to the name of our little town, I promised myself I'd never tell, but I can tell you the name of the little inn, which is very good, good value, good food, and you will be able to deduce it, and I will have kept my word to myself.
It's Locanda del Capitano. If you google it you will find it. I learned about the town from a friend who is married to an Italian and lived in Italy for 5 years. The rest just took a little sleuthing which any good Fodorite is more than capable of.
TDudette: Yes, WWMTTD? It has become my motto!

ok, tacon - I get it. the emphasis on the 2nd syllable, not the third. otherwise, pronounced as above.
I found your little hill town BTW. the locanda looks lovely, but is silent as to tarrif. any idea?

Well, that's what we thought, Annhig, and we did not think we paid much for our meals either.
In both Umbria and Tuscany, we averaged about E30 to E35 for lunch for two with wine, and even that little for the few dinner we had out.
I had expected to pay more, but of course, we are on the American dollar, so things looked good for us.

Hi Tacon, i am glad you posted on my trip report. It gave me the chance to look at yours.
I like your style and the details and the tangents flow smoothly. You are warm, observant and a fun person.
If you come to istanbul and bring me some fresh or semi fresh lemon grass which is impossible to find here, i and Eser will invite you and Mr. Tacon to dinner. (This offer is intended only for the real Taconictraveler and spouse. Impersonators will be severely reprimanded unless they bring a nice and expensive bottle of wine in addition to the lemon grass)

I would be delighted to bring you some lemon grass AND some good red wine!! (And I am the real TT.)
I have been to Northern Greece, but only to Ephesus in Turkey. It is probably the next place on my list, wish I could plan a trip to Istanbul now, but maybe next year.

I don't believe in secrets among travelers to Italy. I believe in sharing.
Locanda del Capitano is in Montone, Italy, just north of Umbertide.

Yes, Zeppole, others have already found it, and I mentioned the Locanda because I think they deserve more business, and I knew people would find.
I don't mind at all, as long as I kept my word to myself -- I am just hoping this little town can stay as it is. But it has already been discovered, in fact, there is a movie festival there in July, for the 14th year in a row!! -so it's hardly a secret.
I also believe that travelers enjoy doing a bit of research on their own, because the reward is greater.
Thanks for your comments.

I just pulled this report up so a friend could find it, and I'm so nostalgic for Umbria!!
If anyone has questions about that part of Italy, I'd be more than happy to answer.
Also, I have found that there are at least two other houses to rent in Montone, including one that would accommodate six people.

Wow! I just pulled up your trip report as my two friends and I are planning a third trip to Italy, and will venture into Umbria for a portion of the trip. Makes we wish we had planned our entire trip in Umbria! My favorite part of traveling in Italy is to settle in an out-of-the-way place, with day trips around, often based on the recommendations of locals. Some of the best memories are things we stumple on in our travels. Thanks for your inspirational report!

Thanks Italynovice and lamq - I'm glad this report is of some use. We would go back and do it all over again!
this year, however, we are going to France. if the money holds out, we'll go back to Umbria in 2012.
enjoy your trips, and send in a report.
