Temple of Poseidon/Cape Sounion worth seeing?
We have only 2 and a half days in Athens and are already planning on taking a tour to Delphi for one day. Is the Temple of Poseidon worth seeing? We were thinking we might take a cab (there are 4 of us) if we have enough time. Thank you.

By the time I got to Cape Sounion I was exhausted, we took a bus & it seemed like it took forever!! Taxi probably will be expensive but worth it. I really enjoyed the "unspoiled" feel to the area, it was absolutely gourgeous. I took some of my best scenic sea pictures there. The restaurant that is there is also pretty good. Because of my being tired I didn't go up the hill to see the temple, but I imagine the view must have been great. That is all that is there though, the temple, restaurant & view-nothing else.

Suanne,<BR><BR>In my opinion as in most Greeks opinion it's a great pleace!. Really unspoiled from tourists (there is a protective law in the area). It's one of the most romantic places during sunset (when most people visit). What month are you planning to visit ? I would definately go, and you don't need a day, it's a nice trip to start from Athens a couple of hours before sunset, then enjoy the sunset there (walk up on the Temple hill) and then you may have a drink at the coffee shop, or even better go to a taverna close by to have dinner. There is one taverna not exactly on the sea, but close to the sea, it's on your way to the temple, called "Marida". Maybe it's the least touristic, the rest tavernas that have better locations, next to the beach, are touristic.<BR><BR>In these cases of tavernas, prefer "small" fish, like marida, atherina etc, that is not expensive and they don't bother to offer something not appropriate (something that may happen to a taverna that you don't know with expensive big fish). In any case taxi would be kind of expensive, but ask for a fix rate, if you rent a car, watch out the road, it's fine and amazing views from the car, but watch out since a big part of it is coastal and only one lane on each direction.(usual in Greece). SInce the Archaiological National museum it's closed, Sounion will be worth it. <BR><BR>PS. There is a new five-star hotel on your way to Sounion, called Gran Resort Lagonnisi, you may go there for formal-style dinner or drinks if you prefer, totaly different setting, but great views too.

I haven't been there for years but when I went it was the highlight of my time in and around AThens. It's an easy drive if you want to rent a car, and you can stop for lunch if you like in the Vouliagmeni beach area where there are some beautiful resorts.<BR>When I was there the temple area was uncrowded, we saw Lord Byron's graffiti carved into one of the columns, and when we looked out over the water we really saw Homer's "wine-dark sea."<BR>Yes, it was purple.<BR>Gorgeous.<BR>Half a day in Athens would be enough time to visit the Acropolis and a museum. Athens has its beauties and also its limitations but you can make your own decisions on how to spend your time.

Just returned a week ago from 2 weeks in Greece. Sounion is a must. Sit at the restaurant there and enjoy a coffee or juice and the view. The Temple is fantastic and great scenary. We saw a good size turtle walking around. We did Delphi as well plus Meteora. Delphi was very nice (historic) but we are so pleased to have done Meteora. Enjoy your trip. You will love it. P.S. we rented a car and had no problem.
