It was mostly filmed on Santorini. The villa featured in the movie was in Oia, at the tip of Santorini. My husband and honeymooned there in 1993 precisely because I had seen Summer Lovers as a freshman in highschool and it totally stuck. We stayed 10 days in Oia and loved every minute of it. The beaches in the movie are on Santorini and easily reached by the buses that run on the island. And there is an archeological dig on Santorini you can visit. There are several "villa" hotels in Oia, so you can be perched on the edge of the isalnd and watch the sun set every night. It's pretyy fabulous, and less touristy than staying in the main town of Thira. That said, it's also more quiet and we had to take a cab or bus into Thira in the evening if we wanted to stay out late dancing, etc... There are many hotels in Thira, with a lot of budget range. E-mail me if you want to know anything else. [email protected]

If you are referring to the place where the characters lived, a private residence was used for the exterior shots and one of the Atlantis Villas was used for the interiors. Both are in the village of Oia. The private residence is now a gift shop called, (what else?), "Summer Lovers"!!
In 1985 I was also drawn to this beautiful village because of the movie, and I loved it so much I stayed for 6 months. After spending a wonderful summer season there I travelled for another 6 months around the world, then returned to California where I was living at the time. But after such a fantastic year of travel I could not reconcile myself to being back in America, so I left again in 1987 and went back to Oia for another 6 months and had an equally amazing summer.
The film used location shots on 5 different islands including Mykonos and Ios. The cliff-jumping shots were not from Santorini. The beaches used were Kamari and Perissa, both on Santorini. The archaeological site where the French girl worked is Akrotiri on Santorini.
