Suggestions on what to see near Zagreb Croatia

After doing an Adriatic Cruise we are going to be in Zagreb for a few days. Does anyone have suggestions on a "not to miss" town around Zagreb that we could get to by train or bus for a day trip? Of course I'm also open for suggestions on top tourist sites and eating places in Zagreb, however I'm finding info on that easier than I am on outlying towns.

Do you know about Plitvice National Park--about 2 hours away, so you could possibly stop en route from the coast.
Though I have not been there, Varazdin sounds wonderful. I really wanted to visit Samobar when I was there also but ran out of time.
Zagreb is underrated imo--I enjoyed it immensely!
This site should help: http://www.croatia.hr//English/Desti...dDestination=8

I agree with yorkshire that Zagreb is underrated - but it depends on what you want to see and experience. I thoroughly enjoyed Varazdin, as well as a brief stop in Cakovec. The Plitvice Lakes are definitely worth seeing.

You'll find my notes about restaurants in the area at:

Hope that helps!

We will have a car and we plan to spend five days in the area around Zagreb.

We are thinking of staying in Sambobar and we can take the bus into Zagreb for a day which is about all I think we will be able to spend there as we have on our list: Varazdin, Plitvice, Porec and Pula.
It really isn't enough time and we will barely scratch the surface.
Let us know how your trip turns out.

Thank you for your responses. Using yorkshires link I was able to discover lots of things. One being that Sambobar will be celebrating "Carnival" while we are there. I will be able to find some good restaurants with kja's helpful info. And Sher, you and yorkshire both have commented on Varazdin and Sombobar. I think we will plan on visiting both of those places. Fodor's has done it again....helped me make a decision with help from fellow travelers.

I too agree with the above; Zagreb is underrated (we loved our time there!) and Varazdin is a great town to visit. We loved all of the baroque architecture, and it feels very different from other parts of Croatia.
