suggestions for weekend trip from London

Can anyone suggest a destination for a weekend trip to take from London?

Husband and I can leave London Friday afternoon (when he gets off work) and he has to be back in the office Monday morning. We'd prefer to rely on trains and not rent a car.

Also, we have already been to Stonehenge, Bath, York, Manchester (of all places!), Coventry, Windsor and Stratford-Upon-Avon on previous trips.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

What about Cambridge, it's a lovely place. Or Oxford or Canterbury or Winchester or Brighton? Brighton is great but I've only been there in the summer, not sure how nice it would be in the winter.

Thanks KayF! I just read some more about Canterbury and it seems great for a weekend trip. I am interested in Brighton as well, but I agree, maybe summer is better. Do you happen to have a recommendation for somewhere to stay? A B&B or an inn, maybe?

And, if others have suggestions, please chime in!

If you're looking for something really interesting and unique, consider Amberley Castle near Arundel. We had a wonderful weekend there. It's claim to fame is that it's supposedly the oldest continuously lived-in castle in UK (I have no idea if that's true or not). Originally built in 1301. Wonderful rooms and grounds. The Queen's Room Restaurant is excellent - and fascinating to eat in the same dining hall as Elizabeth I, Charles II, Henry VIII among a few dozen others. Food was exceptional.

We took the train from London and a driver from the hotel picked us up at the station - no hassle.

Really great experience.

Oops - typo. "1301" should have been "1101".

Do consider Broadstairs or Whitstable.

dfr4848 - Wow! Amberley Castle looks very nice. Unfortunately, I'm hoping to spend less on this weekend trip. And, just curious to see how much it would quote, I typed in the dates for next weekend and was told that it is fully booked.

mamc - Though we really enjoy Paris, we've been there a few times and we'll be there again in June. On the other hand, we have not traveled much in England and thought this would be a good opportunity.

Ultimately, I'd like to see the Lake District, but I think it is too ambitious for a weekend trip.

lots of good suggestion above - you might also consider Edinburgh. A 1 hour flight (or a 4+ hour train) and it is a small city that you can see quite a bit of in 2+ days.

The castle, Royal mile, great restaurants, great views, new/old towns - just a wonderful place.

We found Chester fascinating for a couple of day and also have spent interesting times in Cardiff. Cambridge is always a delight. Brighton is marvelous but best saved for clement weather.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! I must admit, I've had to google some of the places suggested because my knowledge of England is very limited! I haven't decided yet, but will likely pick somewhere that is within a two-hour train ride.

You can get a train from London direct to the Lake District (the Edinburgh train). It' a beautiful place, but do some homework and decide where you want to visit.Or how about Liverpool. It's European City of Culture this year and has lots going on.You can also get a train direct from Euston to Liverpool Lime Street.

Ludlow is another interesting town, and a foodies heaven. Gloucester and Hereford are also worth visiting. Or maybe somewhere in Suffolk or Norfolk.
Chester is well worth visiting - you can admire my ancestors woodcarving skills on the Choir screen in the Cathedral.
Shrewsbury is also very nice.

I normally use Enjoy England site for ideas for a weekend away. They have this survey on Perfect weekend and I went to Brighton after reading such a lovely review from one of the users. The link for it is http://www.enjoyengland.com/your-eng...kend-list.aspx . Oh and they are giving a prize for the ones who supply them with ideas. Apparently is a Champagne Balloon Flight for two! Sounds exciting, even if I would prefer to have the champagne with my feet on the ground..lol

Here are a couple of websites on cardiff

A flight to Belfast is also worth looking at. Some one else has also mentioned Edinburgh.

I second the Channel Islands. Lots of history to see, beautiful scenery, and very interesting maritime backstory. Great food: Cream-based entrées are recommended.
