We stayed at the Metropole (on the Grand Canal) in March and thoroughly enjoyed it. Email the hotel direct for their rates.

La Calcina. Request a front corner room. No fitness center, though. They're rare in Italian hotels unless it's an American chain. There are lots of posts in the archives about this hotel.

I would recommend the Hotel Carlton in Venice. We stayed there for our honeymoon in April and loved it! They have a honeymmon package on their website which it was we booked. Our room had two windows with wooden shutters that opened up onto the canal. I thought it had an AC but my husband does not remember one. We had a small but beautiful room with fresh flowers, champagne, and fresh fruit. The service was excellent and the breakfast was great! It is located across from the train station and across from the vaparetto station. It wasn't the perfect location, but I was impressed. However, all the walking you will be doing, you will not need a fitness center. My husband works out 5 days a week and believe me, he felt as though he had worked out everyday! Plus, your honeymoon should be spent doing romantic and exciting things in one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. Have a wonderful honeymoon!

Christina - do you have any details on Hotel Ala? We are staying there in February on our first trip to Venice. How is the location? I've read frequently that people liked the hotel, but the rooms were quite small. Any info. is appreciated!

tracy,

we stayed at the violino d'oro on the san moise canal near harry's bar. we opted for the room without a view. it was 220 euro vs 270 euro. it also was bigger than a room with a view and even had a comfortable sofa.

the best part was a strict non smoking policy and a simple breakfast. i hopped a vaporetto in the morning and rode to lido island (about 15 minutes) then ran along the island for exercise.

they offer a 10% discount for cash and the price will probably be lower since we went in the high season.

the ac worked well there were high ceilings and large doors overlooking an ally with and angular view of the canal.
very quiet. marble bathroom. good towels. close to san marco. no regrets.

have a blast,

jim

We stayed at Pensione Accademia and loved it. We were in the garden suite and it was beautiful. What I liked most was that it was a little out of the way. You could walk most places, but were away from the crowds. We would definitely stay there again.
