student accomodation paris

my daughter recently got accepted to American University of Paris for spring 2008 semester abroad. I have been trying to find an apartment for her in paris, but cannot decide whether the 7th arrondisement would be more suitalbe or the 5th and 6th. From what I understand, 7th is a residential district, which is often quiet at night, whereas the 5th and the 6th is more populated by students. any suggestions?

also as far as leasing an apartment, I have checked several sites such as parisstay, nyuhabitat, and cite universite. Does anyone know if cite universite houses students from other universities?

any other websites for apartment rental?

We will be leaving for Paris in less than a week- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

any suggesitons for hotels in the 7th arrondisment?

a message to fodorite Intex- I was reading the message you posted on august 25th in regards to your daughter's travel to paris. I was amazed hou similar our situation is , with the exception that my daughter just got accepted to a school in paris. I am desperate to find a suitable apartment for her. Like you, I have a son currently at USC, and I find myself more concerned for my daughter's situation in apris than my son at USC's south east la apartment! now I am not implying that Paris is more dangerous , not at all . but I guess being so far away, you want to make sure that they are staying in a safe area. I am curious as to the outcome of your daughter's housing situation . Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hello,
If I were a student in Paris I'd rather live in the 5th than in the 7th, for sure, even though the American university is located in the 7th.

If you don't find an apartment before you leave, once you get to Paris I'd strongly recommend having a look at FUSAC magazine which is widely available (free) in the city. It's an English language small-ads magazine for English speakers in Paris and has a large section on housing, usually with plenty of short-term leases (properties are often owned by English speakers). You can find it at English language bookshops such as WHSmith on rue de Rivoli (Concorde end) and Brentano's on Avenue de l'Opéra, as well as various Irish and English pubs, American bars, etc. It comes out every fortnight, on Wednesdays but some places like Brentano's get their copies early, on Tuesday evenings, or at least they used to. There is a website but it doesn't have the ads/listings found in the magazine. www.fusac.fr

thanks Hanl . As far as Fusac, I checked the web-site last week, they had some ads. thank you for reminding me , i will check once I arrive in Paris.

I think you are right about the 5th arrondisment rather than 7th for students . Do you know how far is latin quartier from the invalides ?

thank you for your input

The Latin quarter to the Invalides area isn't too far - an easy hop by metro, RER or bus, or a longer (but doable) walk. Alternatively, your daughter may well get into the habit of using the "Velib" bikes which are widely available for use around the city and a brilliant (and cheap) way of getting around.

There are a few useful threads on this board about the Vélib system - e.g. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=35066141 and http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...2&tid=35081719
